The award winning Centre for Leadership Performance is a not-for-profit private limited company working to develop Cumbria's leaders for today and tomorrow. We support and develop the high quality leaders that Cumbria's companies and organisations need to compete effectively in regional, UK and worldwide markets. We do this in various ways:

  • Bespoke leadership consultancy for individual companies. The expertise of our core team and our network of trainers, facilitators and leadership experts means that we can respond to client needs and create flexible programmes, events and approaches to tackle specific needs. Our clients include NHS, GSK, Tata Steel, Sellafield Ltd and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority
  • Open programmes such as Leader to Leader, a well established multi-modular open leadership development programme aimed at executives and senior leaders. The programme brings existing managers and leaders together to learn from each other, share best practice and work through the 4 main elements of the programme: shadowing, action learning, thought Leadership and working on a consultancy challenge and ultimately create a network of skilled and inspired leaders. Participating Organisations to date include GSK, Story Contracting, Iggsund, Doosan Babcock, Nuvia, Sealy UK, Allerdale Council and Balfour Beatty
  • Mentoring workshops to build specific skills. We use our network of specialists to develop the mentoring and coaching skills of managers and leaders, enabling them to build their teams, improve their effectiveness and tackle the challenges of their businesses
  • Shadowing Opportunities to learn from each other, share best practice and ideas and create support networks and forge on-going relationships. These have grown out of our Leader 2 Leader programme as participants appreciated the tremendous value of seeing how different organisations work differently and follows conversations with many organisations who say their people have often been promoted from within and have little opportunity to look outside their day to day work and observe other leaders at similar levels
  • Leadership@Lunch and other bite size leadership events and forums which provide opportunities for SMEs, large companies and public sector organisations to learn from some of the world's leading figures in industry
  • Young Leaders Programmes We work with young people in Cumbria to encourage aspiration and their ambition for leadership roles, through our Dream Placement and Bright Stars programmes

 
Our Approach

The CfLP is a team of experts in leadership development. We are not tied to any one particular leadership 'philosophy' or set of solutions. In delivery of our work we utilise and manage a trusted network of local and international training providers, expert associates, coaches and mentors. We also have close links with business schools and leading business-friendly academics.

We place a strong emphasis on building the ownership and trust of participants throughout development programmes. We design, project manage and deliver bespoke programmes hand-in-hand with our clients, to provide approaches to leadership development that can be embedded into a business. That way they become part of the company's operating culture once the intervention has finished.

Critical to this outcome is the complete buy-in of senior leadership and of the key individuals throughout each organisation who will participate in the development work. Therefore, we place a strong emphasis on building the ownership and trust of participants throughout development programmes.

Self-Learning & Development

Leaders at all levels must develop a propensity for learning — become sponges not rocks. Continual learning and development is essential to allow leaders to grow with the business and they should encourage learning and development in their teams.

Coaching

Senior managers and directors often lack the opportunity to receive purely 'apolitical' feedback and challenge. Coaching can 'hold the mirror up' to leaders — prompting them to take responsibility for the impact of their behaviours and actions on themselves and others. It helps them gain insights into their behaviours and to improve their effectiveness in the delivery of their role.

Coaching is a well-established tool for supporting the development of leaders, working on a 1:1 basis on aspects the individual wishes to address or improve. Some people take time to get used to the process, but it can produce game-changing results.

Leader as Coach

Another aspect of coaching is developing the abilities of the Senior Leadership Team to take a 'coaching approach' to the management and development of their own teams. In this way coaching becomes part and parcel of normal management practice.

Networks, Shadowing & Mentoring

Expansive and rich networks are essential for growth and improvement within businesses — networks allow leaders to learn from others, take ideas from other sectors and develop learning relationships with non-competitive companies.

CfLP can develop and manage shadowing and mentoring opportunities using its extensive network of business contacts to deliver the benefits required by your company. It will also equip your leaders with the skills to make the most of that mentoring opportunity:

Collaboration & Culture

Fundamental to all leaders are the skills and aptitude for collaborative working — as a leadership team, cross functionally across the company, with supply chain and with customer groups.
