Leadership — The First Steps

Appointing someone into their first leadership position is a risk, to them, the team and the organisation. While they may have proven themselves worthy of promotion by demonstrating high levels of skill and knowledge in their arena, how prepared are they for the other, crucial aspect of the role, leading the team? This workshop will provide new and aspiring leaders and managers with the understanding they require to make their first steps count.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, delegates will be able to:

  • Articulate the benefits of effective leadership
  • Identify the differences between leadership and management
  • Know what motivates and demotivates individuals and teams
  • Describe the 4 key responsibilities of a leader in managing performance
  • Establish clear expectations with their team and their line-manager
  • Understand their impact on others and their responsibility to manage their reactions

Course Content

During the workshop we will consider/undertake the following issues/activities:

  • Use the Service-Profit Chain to determine the impact of effective leadership on employees, the organisation and the customer/client
  • Determine the defining characteristics of leadership v management
  • Relating real-life experiences to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and identifying motivating and demotivating factors
  • The 4 key stages of leading performance and identification of the leader's responsibilities at each stage to enable the individual and team to perform and develop
  • Techniques to ensure that expectations are clearly defined and that relationships are based on mutual understanding
  • The leader sets the tone: realising the impact the leader has on others and how to control reactions
