Dream Placement 2014

The Centre for Leadership Performance offered local sixth form students an incredible opportunity for a week's dream placement with a highly successful Cumbrian business, shadowing the MD/CEO and working with their team. Not only that, but we also provided the winners with additional leadership development opportunities and helped to write their dream CV. This was a brilliant chance for local students to get a better understanding of the fantastic opportunities available here in Cumbria as well as helping them to kick start their career and make a lasting impression.

The Dream Placement selection day went incredibly well and was a huge success. Over 100 students applied and 47 were shortlisted. Congratulations to them all!

The lucky shortlisted students gained experience with speed-interviews as well as confidence and team-building exercises. They were also set mini-challenges and, my, did they rise to the challenge! See the photos below.

The Centre for Leadership Performance would like to thank all the talented Cumbrian students involved and all the partner companies who are generously offering Dream Placements.

What the Students Said

' I really enjoyed the event and meeting everyone. I am quite shy so standing up to present was scary. I am studying 3 sciences and maths at A-level so looking for science related opportunities. Very interested in REACT Engineering and also BAE Systems for interviews. '
Robyn Barclay (16) – Lancaster Grammar School for Girls

' I have really enjoyed the event. I came because I wanted the experience of the interviews – I've never had an interview before. Enjoyed the activities - particulary the exercise with the cycling jersey; that was amazing, the different way that people reacted. It was a good example of how the 'story' adds value to a product. '
Hannah Fowler (17) – St Bees School
Interview with Sellafield.

' I have never attended an event like this before - I was very nervous at first. Enjoyed the interview with BAE Systems, and would like a career that has something to do with sciences. '
Josh Wareing (16) – West Lakes College

' I wanted to come to the event for the experience. Very interested in a career in science, so was keen to see REACT Engineering. I've never attended a proper interview before so it ws great experience. '
Jack McNicholas (16) – West Lakes College

' I don't really know what I want to do when I leave school so I thought this might give me some ideas. I enjoy biology and chemistry, so I'd like to do something that involves those subjects. I really enjoyed the event and got some good advice. Had an interview with NDE, and wanted to know more about science-based careers. '
Scarlett Berwick (16) – Whitehaven School

' I am really interested in photography but there was no-one here who could really help me with that. Talked to CFM which was interesting. I enjoyed the fact that the team-working activity meant I had to push myself to do the presentation. '
Freya Blackburn (17) – Whitehaven School

' This is a great opportunity to secure a work placement and to be able to speak to people from companies rather than just fill in a form or something on the internet. I feel that the experience will give me a real advantage in job interviews. I was very nervous at the start but now I am really chilled. I was expecting the people from the big companies to be really scary, but they are quite normal and easy to talk to. I had interviews with TIS and Sellafield. I am applying for university but I'm not convinced that's what I want to do. I'd really like to get a job or an apprenticeship. '
Becky Kelly (17) – West Lakes College

' I think the whole event will put you ahead of other people and give you a real advantage in looking for a job. A placement would be great for providing skills and experience in a working environment. I have interviews lined up with Energy Solutions and REACT Engineering. '
Sam Maddison (16) – Keswick School

' It's a brilliant way to get to know the companies you may want to work for in the future. I am really interested in aerospace engineering, so I chose BAE Systems and REACT for my interviews. I enjoyed the teamworking exercise - it was amazing the number and variety of ideas that people came up with. '
Adam Wozencroft (17) – Netherhall Sixth Form, Maryport

' I thought it was a great opportunity to come here. It has been weirdly enjoyable. I did quite a lot of preparation for it looking at the companies, and it was great meeting all these different people. I enjoy talking to people and I think I would like to be a lawyer or work in Europe doing business law. When I was younger I wanted to be a politician and I am still interested in politics. '
Rachel McSharry (17) – Netherhall Sixth Form, Maryport
Talked to Allerdale Council, Iggesund and Energy Solutions.

' I thought the whole thing today was really good and useful - the experience will be good for job interviews. I really enjoyed the interviews - both asking and answering the questions. '
Leah Thwaites (17) – Barrow Sixth Form College

' Brilliant event. Nice to meet big local companies, and I had already looked at some of them and their websites. Particularly wanted to speak to Glaxo - that would be a perfect job. The team building exercise was good and it was fascinating bringing everyone's ideas together. '
Connor Cassley (17) – Barrow Sixth Form College

' I want to study chemical engineering at University so I enjoyed speaking to National Nuclear Laboratories. It was a really good day, and the 'pocket positives' idea of things to say about yourself in an interview was a great tip. '
Ben Street (17) – Barrow Sixth Form College

' I liked the interviews - they felt like real job interviews rather than just placements. I had interviews with Glaxo and BAE Systems and both seemed to go really well. The whole event is a great way to get face to face with people from companies in an informal way. I enjoyed the team building - it was a chance to learn something new. Really glad I came. '
Hollie Fitzgerald (16) – Barrow Sixth Form College

' I hope coming today will help me to get a job. Talked to Sellafield was very informative. It is great to be able to communicate directly with people from the big companies. '
Dale Tarney (18) – Lakes College, Diploma Level 2 in Painting and Decorating.

' The day has been good. Saw Iggesund and Copeland Borough Council for the interviews. I enjoyed the experience of talking to bigger companies. '
Kristie Mason (17) – Lakes College, Diploma Level 2 in Painting and Decorating

' Enjoyed the day and the chance to talk to big companies like TIS and Solartec; I learned a lot more about the companies that are here, and I think that will be valuable in the future. '
Lewis Ostle (16) – Lakes College, Level 3 Engineering

' My favourite subjects are maths and physics so I am really interested in working with companies that are here today, like Sellafield and the NNL. My only real experience of interviews was on an Oxbridge day - but this was more fun and really enjoyed the team building! '
Emma Jo Suitor (17) – Workington Sixth Form
Interviews with Allerdale CC and TIS.
