' This is the first year that Mott MacDonald have supported the Dream Placement scheme and I can personally say I've loved every minute of it. Both our placements put considerable time and effort into securing their seat on the scheme, and we hope we matched them 'pound-for-pound' with the insight and experience they received during their week out with us. A very memorable and humbling experience that Mott MacDonald will continue to support. '

National Nuclear Laboratory

' Once again we at NNL have been impressed by the calibre of our Dream Placement students. They have confirmed our belief that Cumbria has many talented young people who should aim at the highest levels in their future careers. I congratulate The Centre for Leadership Performance for their ground-breaking initiative and for the recognition and respect Dream Placement has achieved in only two years. '
Paul Howarth, Managing Director, National Nuclear Laboratory

The first meeting with Paul and Graham set the scene for Sarah and Tom and gave them the opportunity to quiz the company leaders on the range of work which NNL does in the nuclear field and the links it has with major companies, governments, universities and national laboratories in the UK and other countries. They were then able to get to grips with the business in more depth in the suite of NNL laboratories at Sellafield. They have also had discussions with some of our NNL young graduates and apprentices and joined in the high level Laboratory Leadership Team meeting chaired by Paul Howarth.

On Wednesday they will look at specific projects being carried out at NNL's huge Workington Engineering Rig Hall, talking to the scientists and engineers who manage the projects. Tom and Sarah will be encouraged to ask about the hurdles which have to be overcome in taking projects through to market - it's not all about the science and technology!

Tom Wright from St Bees School & Sarah Bailey from Millom School learned about how National Nuclear Laboratory tests robots used for nuclear decommissioning. Sarah and Tom were also interviewed by crews from ITV and BBC regional news programmes

There's more - finding out how Innovus helps businesses in Cumbria to develop their good ideas into marketable products, a visit to the University of Manchester's Dalton Facility with its exciting equipment (did you know we have our own mini CERN here in West Cumbria?) and of course, more time to explore leadership with Paul and others.

It's a Dream Placement for two Cumbrian students

This February half-term, students Samuel Moore and James Costin are spending a week with Story Homes to gain significant insight into the world of work. The Dream Placement is organised by the Centre of Leadership and Performance and differs from the usual type of work experience; it's focus being leadership. The students undertake tasks to gain the valuable knowledge and skills in understanding how business leaders work and the challenges they face.

Samuel, 16, from Energy Coast Technical College would like to undertake an apprenticeship after leaving school and has ambitions to work in either construction or engineering design, finally progressing to project management. He's currently studying a wide range of subjects at school and is keeping his options open for the moment.

James, also 16, from Cockermouth School is keen to forge a career in accountancy and is also thinking about kick-starting his career with an apprenticeship as working his way up the ladder is important to him.

Both students had to undergo a rigorous interview procedure to gain places on the Dream Placement. Shelley Hayward, Learning and Development Manager at Story Homes played an integral part in this process and is an enthusiastic advocate of the scheme: "This opportunity for the young people of Cumbria is fantastic as it gives them the chance to pick up skills from leaders in successful businesses from across the piste, helping them in their career decisions and options.

"For Story Homes, this was an opportunity for us to connect with the possible business leaders of the future, encouraging them to engage with us as a future employer as we uphold our position as an employer of choice in the area."
