Leader to Leader Cohort 3 comprised senior leaders from Sellafield Ltd, Direct Rail Services, Ansaldo NES, GSK, Sealy UK and Story Contracting. The programme started in April when delegates met for the first time for an overnight experiential. The focus was for the group to get to know each other and build trust and introduce some of the elements to the programme.

What delegates from this cohort think about Leader to Leader

' I had a great experience for 8 months; it was reflective, it was collaborative, it was constructive. It made me action things, and self-assess and I want to give that opportunity to other workers in my organisation. '
Tony Hewitson, Direct Rail Services

' The course has made me a better leader. I have been managing teams for a number of years — but the course has made me realise that I have not been leading them as effectively as I could. '
Alec Christie, Ansaldo NES

' The course teaches you that you don't have to be a certain type of leader — you find your own leadership style. I have gained a lot more confidence in my abilities as a leader and a manager. '
Karen Armstrong, Sealy Ltd

' It is not a run of the mill management course by any stretch of the imagination. It has been rewarding and is well worth the investment. '
Alistair Grant, Story Contracting

' The course is very useful, there's a lot of subtlety and it delivers small improvements over time which, when you sum them all together, can create a pretty massive impact. '
Christian Fisher, GlaxoSmithKline

' It has, without doubt, changed the way that I manage people. It changes you but not in a fundamental way, it changes you in a way that makes you a more confident and better leader. '
Sandy Rainford, GlaxoSmithKline

' This is designed as a growth opportunity — not a quick fix that would deliver immediate transformation. It envisages peer exchange — sharing ideas and best practices, not a mentoring session. It is about listening, observing and feeding back, not just a venting session. It is about asking why — not telling how. It is about sharing best practices and ways of working — not forcing your company way on others. Ultimately it is about putting the business first — seeing how the same thing could be done in different ways or how a best practice could be adopted to meet your own objectives. '
Christian Fisher, GlaxoSmithKline

What is Leader to Leader?

Leader to Leader is aimed at senior leaders who want to improve their performance. It has been designed and developed in consultation with Cumbrian businesses who said their leaders often lacked the opportunity to look outside of their own day-to-day work. In addition to the shadowing, the dynamic programme involves action learning, a consultancy challenge and on-going peer-to-peer learning allowing delegates to share ideas and best practice.

Ultimately it provides each individual with a better understanding of the type of leader they are, and the ways in which they need to grow. The group were united in their appreciation of the personal impact of Leader to Leader:

Consultancy Challenge

An important part of the course is to pose a consultancy challenge for the group. The outcome was the proposal for Cross Company Job Shadowing: on-the-job development which utilises direct and objective observation, asking why (open questions), immediate discussion and the exchange of best practices in order to promote growth and improvement among two peers employed in different industries.

The final element of the course involved a presentation by the group to enlist the support of sponsors from their employers, laying out how the Work Shadowing programme can benefit their companies, and proposals for expanding it across Cumbria and beyond.
