Lifelong leadership learning in Cumbria

“it’s not like learning, it’s just brilliant!” When a child says that, and you know how much they have really learned, that is truly inspirational learning design.
I went into Dream Placement looking for leadership opportunities and an insight into working in politics. I found both during my week in the office of Copeland MP Trudy Harrison and her constituency team. I was surprised at the office environment – so friendly but so hard working on behalf of the constituents. I accompanied Trudy on a visit to Furness General Hospital where I also met newly-elected Barrow-in-Furness MP Simon Fell.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere and felt very much like one of the team. I’d never had an experience like this before – I had done straightforward work experience but my Dream Placement was quite different.
First off, it was amazing that experience was even available in terms of the lockdown, it was also a great opportunity to meet new people outside of your own school and work with new people who you may not necessarily choose to work with previously as you may not know them well. The project is also quite independent as well so students aren’t completely controlled by guidelines that teachers have set and so they must cover them. I would recommend the ProjX work awareness programme to other students as it opens your eyes to all the different jobs that are required for one project to work and how varied those jobs are. Also, working on the project in teams offers a different experience to what you might do in school as you only focused on one thing and you can develop many skills by working in a team for two weeks, such as knowing when to step up when others can’t.
I have really enjoyed being able to share my career experience even though it is very short, as this position is my first full time job. I really hope I’ve been able to inspire students like others have done for me through my learning experiences, and I give them the drive to pursue a career they really want to do.
GSK were not even on my radar but I found the Dream Placement with them amazing. I got to meet and chat to the site director and deputy site director, and accessing people at that level was fantastic. It was nothing like the work experience I did in year 10 and I can’t imagine getting this sort of experience if I had tried to organise it on my own or through school.
One of the most surprising aspects was how well organised the whole process was from the application process and selection right through to the Placement itself. The interview was the toughest part but GSK said I did that really well and Dream Placement has given me a real confidence boost. I also found it impressive that the companies were able to choose students they wanted to talk to – not just us selecting a company.
The site director talked to me about qualifications and he advised that behavioural skills – leadership, managing teams and problem solving – are just as important as technical skills. It was definitely worthwhile.
Engaging with the Bright Stars Competition has been a memorable event for school. The children’s enthusiasm working with a business partner meant that they learnt transferable skills, became closer to our local community and made a real difference to some of the members of our community.
I had done work placements before but nothing like this. I was already thinking about civil engineering as a career – but I had no idea of those skills being used in the rail sector, so working with the Story team was a real eye-opener.
The Dream Placement application and selection process was surprisingly tough but we got good feedback along the way that will help improve my skills going forward.
Story Contracting has a really good graduate scheme so that will be something I will be looking at in the future and they have offered me the chance to do some more work experience over the summer. I will definitely stay in contact with them.
I really enjoyed this week, it has helped me gain skills i thought was impossible to achieve.
I have been involved with Bright Stars since its inception – first as a head teacher and then as
chair of the judging panel for the last two years. I have seen the scheme grow and also been able
to appreciate the tremendous value it offers to the children involved, to teachers and to the
companies supporting them.
Bright Stars enables the children to use a range of skills they learn in the classroom in a real
world scenario, working alongside adults from local businesses to broaden their experience and
knowledge.
A key element in Bright Stars is collaboration and the children are able to take on different roles
including leadership roles, which provide an excellent foundation for their future development,
building confidence in their own abilities, and their aspirations for the future.
Companies taking part are having a hugely positive impact on these children, and the company
representatives rightly take a great deal of pride in their involvement.
Didn’t think I was a team leader or team player so didn’t think would have confidence to do any of that but this has shown me that I can do teamwork and do it more effectively. Just like to thank the business partners who took the time out to talk to us all as it’s been amazing and I’ve learnt so much.
Bright stars has really lived up to its name. We have developed a school full of Bright Stars who have gained so much knowledge about the world of work and how to run a company. The competition has given our children so many opportunities, beyond what we anticipated. Thank you CfLP.
It is always so rewarding to be a part of the Bright Stars competition. Not only does it strengthen relationships between schools and businesses, it is also such a joy to observe the journey that the children set foot on and all of the skills they acquire along the way.
Delighted to collaborate with so many other business partners and support delivery of this work awareness programme ProjX 2020. For CfLP to have stepped up to challenge of adapting the scope of the brief AND the delivery mechanism to online rather than face to face in such a short space of time is extraordinary. The student response and their willingness to rise to the challenge just shows that there are some inspiring Cumbria Future Leaders in the wings ready to shine in their future careers.
Bright Stars generates a tremendous feelgood factor for our staff and it reflects the pride which our business has in the local community. There is also a longer-term benefit – creating awareness among the children of career opportunities which exist within local companies.
A fantastic initiative for young people in the area to gain new skills, increase confidence and get a snapshot of real world industry.
The aim of Bright Stars is to open young children’s eyes to the excitement of entrepreneurship and build confidence by working as a
team to run a mini business. Raising the aspiration and confidence of Cumbria’s young
people is a vital part of the CfLP’s work. We work with leaders and managers across the
county to further develop their leadership skills. But like many other businesses we also
believe that supporting the talents of all the county’s young people is vital for the future
economy of Cumbria.
I love being involved with the ProjX programme as I feel when I was at school, there weren’t as many options and we didn’t get as much information on different career paths and jobs we could go into. I like the fact that I’m helping to give student’s ideas on a career path they may not have considered or may not even known about.
A wonderful opportunity for our Year 1 children to get an insight into how the business world works.
We are an SME and competing against some major players for young talent in Cumbria so Dream Placement is an important platform for us to raise our visibility as an employer. We work with the Centre for Leadership Performance on a number of different projects involving young people and they are all worthwhile for our business.
Christian and Charlotte were outstanding candidates and repaid the time and effort we put into creating an interesting programme for them. They were really keen to learn about the business and put a lot of work into the project we set for them, talking to a whole range of our employees and customers to determine where our business could be improved.
It was a real privilege to be part of this year’s ProjX initiative and I take my hat off to the organisers and the students who did such a great job with the added complications brought about by Covid-19. It’s such a fantastic opportunity for the students and I hope they came away from it with new ideas, skills and greater confidence.
This was our first year taking part in Dream Placement although we have previously worked with the CfLP on Bright Stars which has been very successful and enjoyable. Dream Placement is a really good way of raising our profile with young people in our region, and also drawing attention to recycling and waste management as a career, that otherwise perhaps wouldn’t be thought about by the students. Our placement student (Jesse) was fantastic – very interested and enthusiastic throughout the whole week, demonstrated by an excellent presentation of his project at the end of the week back to our business. He was taken to a number of our different sites during the week to show the nature and complexity of work we do around waste management and recycling as well as spending time in our offices with our people, to understand the customer journey.
Personally, I really enjoyed coaching and mentoring Jesse during his time with us; seeing the business through his eyes gave me a refreshing perspective on what we do, but also seeing his skills and confidence develop over the week was reward in itself
I love being involved with the ProjX programme as I feel when I was at school, there weren’t as many options and we didn’t get as much information on different career paths and jobs we could go into. I like the fact that I’m helping to give student’s ideas on a career path they may not have considered or may not even known about.
AECOM have a slogan. Imagine it. Delivered. In week one of competition one of the Ennerdale Bright Stars came up with their equivalent – Small School. Big Minds! This epitomises the passion that the school has thrown at the challenges.
Seeing the young people develop their ideas and articulate their concepts in front of a largish unknown group of professionals, made me extremely proud of our young people and humbled to be part of the project led by CfLP
The ProjX programme is a fantastic project for students to help develop some fantastic business ideas as well as understanding all the different considerations to see the idea come to life. It is also brilliant for local businesses to be able to give something back to students by providing specific sessions throughout the project.
