Week 1

Team name: Happy Hearts

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we met Nicky from Oak Tree Animal Charity. She came into our school to talk to us about what Bright Stars is and what we will be getting up to over the next few weeks. We told Nicky our ideas for what we could do for our campaign and she helped us to think about our ideas and what we could do with them. Nicky explained to us about what businesses are and we looked at some different businesses, like Mcvities.

We had a secret vote to decide which campaign we would do - the campaign with the most votes was: Keeping animals occupied with recycled toys and homemade treats!

What did you learn this week?

This week we learnt about the 5Ps of business: people, price, place, product and promotion. We thought about these 5Ps and how they would work for our campaign. We shared these with the class. We learnt about profit and how to calculate it. We learnt the difference between a business and charity.

What did you find difficult this week?

It was difficult to decide on which product to choose for our campaign as we had so many good ideas but we know we should only have one or two as we don't have enough time or people to do too much.

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, Nicky came in and we finalised our 5Ps and used this to create our business plan. We did this as a team and got lots of ideas down on paper. We looked at some photos of similar products and decided on the ones we hope to create. We now need to go home and collect recycled resources to use for our project. Yesterday we started to think about our name, logo and tagline as well as what jobs we might need.

What did you learn this week?

We have learnt how to write a business plan and why this is important - we need to know what we are doing and what we are selling! We also learnt how to make recycled pet toys. Some of us learnt that cats like to climb and what toys dogs like to play with.

What did you find difficult this week?

The business plan was a bit tricky to write when you haven't written before but we managed! Nicky helped us to think about how we can make toys safe for pets but it was difficult to think of ideas.

Week 3

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week ,Nicky came in and we talked about the different jobs our class will be doing in the upcoming weeks. Our class teacher and helpers conducted job interviews and made Ruby managing director and Kitty secretary! We now have a jobs and our secretary and managing director are supporting everyone's teams. We have created a project name that is called...HAPPY HEARTS! We are starting to create recipes for dog treats and our design team are hard at work designing and making our logo and posters that will inform people in the local area.

What did you learn this week?

Our class learnt how to act in a job interview and also learnt how to fill out a job application. We are now learning how to make dog treats and pet toys to sell at a market stall outside school or at possibly Wigton Market.

What did you find difficult this week?

This week, many of the children in the class found it difficult to decide which job to apply for. Many people wanted to be manager so found it difficult to not get the job.

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we have been thinking and finding what we will need to create our different products. This included everyone working together and helping find the cheapest resources and then the finance team had to work out the remaining budget. We have secured a table at Wigton Market for free by a kind and generous man named Phil. We have also changed our name to incorporate our business ideas. Our business is now named... HAPPY PAWS! Our logo has been created by the design team and so have the posters. We can't wait to get started on the selling!

What did you learn this week?

This week, we have learnt how to find the cheapest products on different websites. Some of us have also leant how to make pompoms as well and we are making lots of these to sell.

What did you find difficult this week?

This week, some of us found it difficult to find the most cost effective products as there are so many different websites.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We have been busy creating lots of our products for example: snuffle balls, pompoms on string and different sized pompoms too! We had a digital call with Nicky and we talked about marketing and money. We uploaded a poster on our school Facebook page; we already have a few coming in. We have also planned dates to sell all of our products as well. These are . . . Thursday 25th May 2023 outside our school at home time and at Wigton market on Friday 26th May 2023! We hope to see you there!

What did you learn this week?

This week, we have learnt how to make snuffle balls and pompoms. This is hard but also extremely fun! our finance team have also learnt how to make a excel spread sheet.

What did you find difficult this week?

Some of our team found it hard to get the hang of making all the different products we have made.

Week 6

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we visited Oak Tree Animals Charity and met Nicky and some of the animals! We all loved learning about the different animals and their different stories. We made lots and lots of our products this week and even had to make over two hundred dog treats! We have had two stalls; one at school and one at Wigton market, and we even made some online sales too!. We have made lots of money from this and we could possibly have another sale to come after half term.

What did you learn this week?

This week, we have learnt about estimating sensibly, marketing and how to price. This was a struggle to start with but we are now happy with our prices and stock. We learnt how to be good sales people at the markets and how to draw customers in!

What did you find difficult this week?

We found estimating amounts of stock needed quite hard as you don't know how much people will want and what is very popular. Our original plan of 50g of biscuits were not enough so we had to increase.

Week 7 - half term

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we decided to make more biscuits as they were so popular and sold out before everyone got chance to buy some! We decided to advertise on Facebook rather than do another stall and managed to sell over 40 more bags of treats! Nicky also came to visit us for one last time and she helped us get started with our video. We made a gift box for Nicky to take back to Oak Tree with some of our products for the animals to enjoy! We created footage for our video and learnt how to edit it together on an iPad.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how important social media is when advertising products and how this means you can sell to a wider community. We learnt that it is important to come together and work as a team when time is limited. We learnt how to create an effective video and edit this on an iPad.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it difficult to make the dog treats in time to sell them for the deadline so we had to work together as a team. We also decided to put a maximum purchase of 2 bags per person.

For pupils to answer:
In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?

Bright Stars has been so fun to be a part of and we have learnt all about how to run an effective business! We have worked as a team and helped to make a difference to the animals at Oak Tree.

For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?

Bright Stars has been fantastic this year and it has been really rewarding to see the children watch their ideas grow into a business! They have enjoyed working with Nicky at Oak Tree and have raised a fantastic amount to donate, as well as a little money to keep for themselves to put towards a treat. They have worked really well as a team and have learnt a lot about the different job roles and how these all work together.
