Tell us what you have been doing this week

We had Adrian and Katy back in to school to talk to us. Adrian talked to us about a business plan and we learnt all about the product, customer, promotion and pricing.
We confirmed what our business would be, Bug Hotels, and then we made our materials list, worked through our business plan and talked about our customers.
The children had so many fabulous ideas about who to sell to and for how much. They were keen to discuss the business plan and make sure that they were n the right track.

What did you learn this week?

We learned what a social enterprise is and we had a really good discussion about whether we were developing a social enterprise. We decided that because we are aiming to house pollinating insects which is good for the flowers and therefor good for the environment then we are definitely a social ente

What did you find difficult this week?

Pricing our product was tricky this week. We had to have a discussion and then a vote to decide how we would price our product. There was some superb collaboration amongst the children.

Week 3

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This has been a busy week of gathering materials and prepping our containers for the bug hotels. We have worked as a team to divide the jobs we had on our list and ensure that we stayed on target for production. The children have been thinking of exciting names for all the bug hotels, they have had some very inventive ideas and used their alliteration skills to make the bug hotels more desirable for the customers.

What did you learn this week?

The children learned that team work enables you to achieve a lot more than if you were you working alone. They collaborated to split the tasks on our list and ensure that all the jobs we needed to achieve this week were completed. There enthusiasm has been fantastic.

What did you find difficult this week?

We planned out some of then names for our bug hotels this week and the challenge was to have creative and enticing names. The children really put a lot of thought into the names of their bug hotels.

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

Production is well under way and the children have been designing and decorating their bug hotels. They have ensured that the designs are attractive and appealing to our consumers. The children have also been pricing up the bug hotels and have done this by sorting the hotels into size and pricing accordingly. We have been thinking about where and how we are going to sell them to optimise our sales as much as possible.

What did you learn this week?

This week we have learned a little bit about keeping an order list and starting a little accounts book. We have had some pre orders on our bug hotels and we needed to make a list to ensure we filled the orders correctly. As we have had some sales we have also started an accounts book.

What did you find difficult this week?

The children originally found pricing our bug hotels quite tricky until we decided that size was a good way of getting a good pricing range for them. Great team discussion to reach this conclusion.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week Katy, our business partner, talked to us about job roles and she helped us decide what our roles would be within our business organization. The children were able to state each others strengths and they were so supportive of each other in gaining the correct role for their strength.
Production was very busy this week and everyone was keen to get the bug hotels ready for sale. They decided that we would have stalls at school to sell to parents and then we would find out where else we could set up our stall to attract other customers.

What did you learn this week?

The children learned how important each job role is in an organization and that team work is crucial towards making a business a success. The children learned that each of us has a strength that can really help a business and that if we work together we can be a success.

What did you find difficult this week?

There was a lot of discussion about where we could go to sell our bug hotels to attract maximum business, so far we will be selling at school and at our parish church.

Week 6

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week the children have been advertising for their stalls. They have organised two stalls so that they were able to get as many parents as possible to visit their stalls. The children have been practicing their 'sales pitch' so that they could advertise and sell their bug hotels to their best potential. They practiced on members of staff to make their product sound as exciting as possible. The head of sales modeled what to say and everyone made sure they said the right thing. The children had advertised well and attracted a lot of customers.

What did you learn this week?

The children learned all about marketing and sales this week. They discussed how they could promote their product and then what would they say about their product to make them desirable to the consumer. The children have used the language of bug business- product, sales, marketing, customer etc.

What did you find difficult this week?

The children worked together to develop words and phrases that would make the bug hotels more attractive to their customer. The had to develop their language and gain confidence with this.
