Week 1

Team name: Magic Miracles

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have taken part in lots of brainstorming for our business plan. We decided on setting up a Christmas pop up shop as part of our social enterprise plan.
Georgia come into the school and delivered her first lesson and told the pupils what Bright Stars is and how the social enterprise is going to make a difference.
We received our seed funding and have ordered our materials to get started.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt about: Bright Stars, differences between goods and services, what profit means, the 5 point plan, sustainability and how we are going to all work together to create our successful social enterprise.

What did you find difficult this week?

One thing we may have found difficult was deciding on just a few ideas for products in our Christmas pop up shop, as each pupil had their own idea. Therefore we chosen the top 3 product ideas.

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have:
Come up with our business name
Looked at the 5 point plan and how we will use this with our own social enterprise
Designed our logo
Been given homework to look at the different roles and responsibilities

What did you learn this week?

This week we have learnt:
How a 5 point plan is used to make business decisions, such as the place we are going to sell the product. We have decided we are going to sell the product in the school hall at lunch times.
What prices we are going to sell our products
The importance of marketing/other rol

What did you find difficult this week?

This week, we found coming up with the 5pp ideas difficult as there are lots of different ideas and it was difficult trying to decide one for each

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been learning about the different roles and responsibilities within a business and the importance of each role. We have understood that each role is just as important of others. The team were then split into different functions based on their personal strengths and weakness and we had mock interviews as to why we wanted to be put in that role and why we thought we'd be well suited to the roll.

we also started brainstorming our logo and the location of where we are going to sell our products. We decided as our theme is Christmas, we will sell at the Christmas fayre.

What did you learn this week?

This week, we learnt a lot about how different strengths and talents can make you more suited for different roles. For example, the children who are very creative and imaginative were well suited for the marketing/design team. Whereas the ones who were more interested in maths were put in finance.

What did you find difficult this week?

This week it was difficult to think of which role we would all be best in, as some people may have lots of different strengths. Therefore we had mock interviews with Georgia and she helped us decide.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have started creating our products. We are now all working in different groups: design, finance, marketing, project management and we are all apart of the customer service and business development team. Each team has been assigned their own task this week such as creating the product, creating the posters, making the box to sell from and creating the logo.

What did you learn this week?

This week we learnt how all of the different teams all link to each other. For example, finance could tell us how much money we had left to spend so then design could then order more products and then marketing could add more products to the posters we are creating for marketing.

What did you find difficult this week?

This week we have found nothing difficult. We are well on the way with our 5 point plan and have been able to work well as a class to create our new products and logo this week.

Week 6

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been learning about money, profit and how our contributions can make a difference to the wider community, such as our chosen charity Mary's meals.

we have all agreed on what prices we are going to sell our products for to be able to make a profit and have gathered together all of our expenses such as receipts and left the income column blank so we can fill this out when we sell our products.

we have all enjoyed working as a team putting together our business plan and have been busy making the products look good ready to sell to our customers.

What did you learn this week?

This we we learnt that profit is the difference between income and expenses. For example, if you buy a banana for 50p and sell it for 70p, you have made a 20p profit.

we then learnt about how we are going to make a profit when we sell our products.

What did you find difficult this week?

This week, we found coming up with prices that will make us a profit but also reasonable to our customer difficult. But we managed to all agree on an appropriate price.

Week 7

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been designing our posters following our marketing plan the last few weeks.
Our marketing plan consisted of the below points:
- Make it bright and colourful
- Put the posters in busy places
- Include our business name
- Include our logo
- Include what, where and how much we are selling

We then all chosen a favourite logo and 2 people in the class won a prize. We incorporated the winning logo onto all of our posters so they were all consistent and catchy to our customers.

Everyone did their own poster so we have lots to put around the school.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt what makes a good poster and how marketing works. After Georgia taught us about how to be good at marketing products, we all agreed on including a logo, prices, location, bright and colourful, our business name and our purpose.

What did you find difficult this week?

This week, we found working to time pressures difficult, we were given different tasks which had project deadlines, just like in the real workplace. But we helped each other if someone was struggling

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have sold our products at the Christmas Fayre.

Firstly, we created our logo and had a group competition on the best one so the logo was consistent. We then all agreed a price for the products and made sure the prices were more than the cost. We then decided a location: the senior school's next door Christmas fayre. We put posters around the playground and schools to attract our customers. The 5 Ps were all done by the class and some people had their own roles such as finance and marketing.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to create our own social enterprise following the 5Ps we have been looking at over the last few weeks. We were able to put the work we'd been doing every week together into a final pop up shop and we all worked well as part of a team

What did you find difficult this week?

This week we found time pressures difficult as we were fast approaching the deadline!

Week 9

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been completing our project evaluation, counting our income and finalising our business plans. We have been looking at what went well and what we could have improved on overall. We have also been putting together our 2 minute video for the project and have been assigning roles to be able to do this smoothly. We created lots of colourful posters to show everyone about what we have been doing, such as the school, BAE systems and the CfL. Overall, our social enterprise was a success and we are very proud of what we achieved in the last 9 weeks.

What did you learn this week?

This week we understood how to work out profit. We counted our money, took away what we had spent and were left with profit. We also then learnt the difference between income and profit. We also learnt how to put together a business evaluation plan, where you look at the strengths and weaknesses.

What did you find difficult this week?

This week, we found working to a tight deadline difficult as we had lots to do before the project deadline! We learned how to work in teams with different roles so that we could get everything done

For pupils to answer:

In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?

Bright Stars has helped us learn a lot about helping people, the community and how to manage money because we have been able to learn about all the different steps of setting up a social enterprise.

For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?

This project has had a tremendous impact on our school because it has allowed the pupils to develop skills they wouldn't be able to in a normal class. The skills developed include: time-keeping, managing money, leadership, teamwork etc which are all skills needed in the real world. The young pupils have definitely grown throughout this opportunity, with children that were very shy coming out of their shell and presenting to their classmates. Overall, we are delighted to have been able to facilitate this opportunity and will definitely be continuing to become involved with more community / social activities after seeing the benefit this project has had on the school's corporate social responsibility, the pupils engagement with the community and the positive impact the profit will have on our chosen charity.
