Week 1

Team name: Fruitlicious Boltons

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we met the people from the business we are partnered with. They explained who they are (James and Liza), what they do and how we are going to work together as a team over the next 8 weeks.
When they visited us in school, they explained what a business and a social enterprise is.
We have been thinking hard about what we would like to do for our social enterprise and have thought of a few ideas. James set us a task of working together as a team to complete the mind map and we are going to discuss our ideas next week.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt that a business is a group of people that make money and sell things. We also found out how businesses spend their money and how they can help charities or others in need. We learnt that teamwork is important and everyone needs to work together for it to work.

What did you find difficult this week?

Some of us found it hard to think about what we might sell.

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we have been focussing on completing the mind maps, which is the task that James set us last week. As a class, we had two products that we were keen on making and selling - wind chimes and fruit kebabs.

We worked together in small groups to complete the mind maps based on the two different products and when James and Liza arrived on Friday, we discussed our ideas and took it to a vote to decide on the final product we are going to make and sell. The winner was... fruit kebabs!

What did you learn this week?

This week, we learnt about the different roles and positions of people in a business. We talked about the different roles that we would all need to have to make our business successful.

Our task this week is to decide on which role we will be best suited to.

What did you find difficult this week?

Some of us found it difficult to make a final decision on which product we will make and sell, but after deciding to take it to a vote, this made it easier.

Week 3

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We got interviewed by James and Liza for our job roles this week. Before we got interviewed on Friday, we all had to fill in a job application and we had to explain why we wanted the role and why we thought we would be good at those jobs. We learnt that each job role is going to include us working in teams. During the interview process, we worked in groups depending on the role we wanted and we found it helpful to have each other to answer questions. We found out that working together as a team can be tricky and it's not always easy to come to an agreement - this is something we'll work on.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt that to get certain job roles, you have to clearly explain why you want the role and what skills you have that show you'll be good at it. We found out that interviews include getting asked a lot of questions and it can be nerve-wracking (especially when the rest of the class is watching).

What did you find difficult this week?

When we were asked questions on the spot we sometimes found it a bit hard to think of an answer. Interviews are hard! It was hard to think about exactly why we wanted the roles.

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

Each of our teams had different tasks to complete and one of the tasks for the design team was to design our company logo. They each designed their own logo and then, as a class, we voted on the parts we liked from each one and combined them to make one final logo.
The marketing team looked at the different types of fruits we can possibly use and they asked the children in each class what their favourite fruits are. This has helped us decide which fruits we may use on our kebabs. We have also been busy writing letters that will be sent to local companies to see if they can help us.

What did you learn this week?

We have learnt what fruits the children in school like and lots of children like strawberries and watermelon. The finance team learnt about prices for some of the fruits we are going to use. We found out that you don't just look at prices but you also have to look at the weight.

What did you find difficult this week?

After doing the survey we found it a little hard to make a final decision on fruits. It is hard to know exactly where to buy all the fruit from. We found it a bit hard to make a decision on the logo.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We have sent our letters to local shops and businesses and now we are waiting on responses.
We are looking forward to seeing if we get any responses.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt that it is important to be persuasive and polite when writing formal letters. We enjoyed writing our letters though.

What did you find difficult this week?

Sometimes it can be tricky not being bossy when writing a persuasive letter.

some

Busy writing our letters.

Week 6 - half term

Week 7

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We have designed our posters as part of our advertisement and we are going to deliver these next week.

When James arrived on Friday, we talked a lot about working out the individual prices of the fruit, skewers and packaging so that we can calculate the price of each kebab that we are going to sell them at.

We talked about what information we are going to provide on the labels attached to the kebabs.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt about prices of each individual item we will use for our kebabs and this will help us work out how much to sell our kebabs for. This is not as easy as we thought. The production team need to be quick at supplying more kebabs if they are needed. We learnt about the benefits of the fruit.

What did you find difficult this week?

Some of us found it difficult to think about how we are going to present the fruit on the kebabs. Working out the individual prices of each item is very tricky.

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This has possibly been the busiest week we have had so far!
We advertised the company by delivering posters around the village, which let them know when and where we will be selling the fruit kebabs.
We worked out how much it will cost for each individual piece of fruit and combined the prices to find a total for each kebab.
We worked in pairs to make prototypes and decided on how the kebabs will look. We then took it to a vote to decide on the final design.
Then we worked in pairs to make the information label, which will be stuck to the packaging of each kebab and made the front label too.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to work out the cost of each piece of fruit. To do this we counted the amount of strawberries and grapes there were in each container and cut the pineapple and melon into equal-sized chunks. Then we divided the price by each amount to get the individual price.

What did you find difficult this week?

It was trickier than we thought to pierce the fruit onto each skewer (some of us got quite messy!) and to decide on a final design.
Working out the prices was quite hard and really made us think.

Week 9

Tell us what you have been doing this week

It is the final week and the week where we sell our kebabs! On Thursday, we sold our kebabs to the parents and children for £1 each, but we did a lot of preparation before selling them. To make them, we had to cut the strawberries, melon and pineapple into chunks and then we pierced the fruit onto each skewer. In total, we made around 100 kebabs. We were exhausted by the end! We had a large amount of fruit left over after making the kebabs, so we decided to make the most of what we could by making fruit bags using the extra amount we had left over. We stuck all the labels on to the bags.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt that the tasks we did took a lot of perseverance, which was hard but we did it. We worked well as a team when we made the kebabs , because we made a lot in a short amount of time, We have a good community who supported our business. People were generous and some did not ask for change.

What did you find difficult this week?

It was nerve-wracking actually selling the kebabs and talking to our customers. It was a good experience though. It was tiring making the kebabs, but also good fun.

For pupils to answer:

In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?

It has been a great opportunity to learn about how a business works and find out what is involved in deciding on, designing, making and selling a product. It was fun to work with each other!

For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?

It has encouraged more children to eat healthy snacks. Encouraged them to try more fruits, especially the younger children, because the kebabs looked appetising. It has brought the community together. The programme enabled the children to become more independent and confident as well as take on more responsibility. It has opened up links to more local businesses, whom we will stay in contact now for future events.
