Week 1

Team name: Wagtails

Tell us what you have been doing this week

All the Year 2 classes came together to brainstorm ideas for how we could take part in the bright stars project. We worked in mixed teams that had children from classes and mixed abilities. During the session we each worked collaboratively and cooperated with one another to record our ideas. Over the session each of us took it in turns to scribe our ideas on our ideas poster. Later we all came together to discuss our ideas. We were encouraged to think about how feasible the ideas were and what skills, resources and time we would require to produce our ideas ready for our navy friends.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt about what enterprise and business mean. We learnt that businesses need a vision and sometimes the simplest thing can best idea.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it hard to make everyone feel valued as not every idea could be used.

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we welcomed our friends from the navy to our school. They talked to us about what they do at BAE and also life in the navy and the submarines. The children enjoyed this and asked lots of questions. The children told the gentlemen about their ideas and they helped to distill down our ideas to three options: a keyring, welfare package and wild flower seed bombs.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to vote to select our ideas. We also learnt that even if our idea was not selected we should collaborate and work as team to make sure our classes had a good product.

What did you find difficult this week?

Some of us found it difficult to acknowledge that our ideas may not be the best but are still valued by our classmates and teachers.

Week 3

Tell us what you have been doing this week

Our naval friends visited us again and we discussed how we could link the Royal Navy and our school on our product. By this point we had selected keyrings as our end goal but we were inspired by the Chief Roach talking about three-dimensional printing. He also discussed how these can be used on submarines and in the Royal Navy to repair parts and help maintain submarines whilst not in port. Then the children were given the opportunity to design their keyrings after explaining that one side of the keyring needed to have a link to our school and on the other side links to our community/navy.

What did you learn this week?

We had to think about why our school is special and how we could represent it in images. We linked to our geography curriculum as we had to think of local landmarks which could be used as symbols for Ulverston. The children also discussed symbols of the navy and why it is important to our town.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it hard to keep our initial designs simple and also to keep in mind the links to our region and the navy which had discussed earlier in the session.

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

The Royal Navy brought in their three-dimensional printer to inspire us! They linked the equipment to our SMART board and set it up. They showed us how the keyrings would look on the screen and the children had to select the colours for the product. After the Royal Navy showed us how a keyring would look: size, shape, colour and weight. Then the machine was programmed to create a 3D ship which the children loved watching and were fascinated by the process! This week the navy picked two designs which they would produce for us. The winners were Samson and Emilia.

What did you learn this week?

The children learn about a new technology and how it works. The classes also learnt how a design can evolve and end up on a prototype.

What did you find difficult this week?

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

After a working pause we had the navy come back in and show us the two final products. We discussed the retail price for the items and how we would market them. The children produced posters to advertise their wares around school. We also talked about how we could make a simple video to advertise our products which we could share on Class Dojo so parents and guardians could learn about them too.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to evaluate our products and also discussed ways we could promote and market them. We learnt to think about the key information that would be needed to inform people about them: cost, location, materials, purpose, sale points.

What did you find difficult this week?

Making sure our school community are aware of our project and that we have the right number of people on board to help us sell our items.

Week 7

Tell us what you have been doing this week

The children have been promoting our business by displaying posters around the school and advertising on our Class Dojo platform.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt that it is important to think about everybody who may want to buy our keyrings and where to do our marketing.

What did you find difficult this week?

Making posters were vibrant and eye catching. Also making sure our writing was good so students could read the information.

Week 9

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been selling our key rings. We are reaching out to the community and to our school families in lots of different ways. Our lollipop lady is selling them on her crossing every morning and evening and we have set up stalls at sports days also. We have made links with our junior school also and we are selling hem at their sports day too. We are advertising our key rings on our class dojo and family links. The school council are visiting our classes everyday to try and sell more keyrings. We are doing end of year shows and we are selling them to our audience.

What did you learn this week?

We have learnt the importance of making links with the community and advertising the key rings.

What did you find difficult this week?

Trying to find ways to sell the last remaining key rings!
