Week 1

Team name: Awesome Orton Superstars

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We met Cristina who introduced herself and told us about the organisations she is connected with.
Cristina explained what a social enterprise business was. She showed us some boxes that were made to help parents who had new babies born with Downs Syndrome and talked about how much the boxes helped the families at the time.
We got together in teams to think about some ideas for our own business and our business name. After some discussion and vote, we decided to be the Awesome Orton Superstars. Our ideas were a mixture of events and products to sell. We decided to take time to think.

What did you learn this week?

We learned about the 5p's in business.
Team work and sharing ideas. We found that some people started an idea and then by working together the ideas developed.
We found that deciding things as a large group was sometime tricky. We used a vote and had to learn to accept the majority.

What did you find difficult this week?

Our name was going to be the Orton Warriors. We'd had a few suggestions and decided to vote. After some thought we weren't happy with the name as we felt warrior could mean fighting so we changed it.

Tell us what you have been doing this week

One of our superstar artists designed a logo which we voted to adopt.
We finalised our business idea. We are going to hold a community bingo and games night on Thursday 13th June from 6pm. We will serve home made cakes & drinks & have a stall called Cool Creatures selling products that attracted pollinators such as bees and butterflies or things that helped to remind people about the benefits of insects in their gardens. We are going to ask the other classes to make things.
We thought about what we would need and who we could write to to ask for help especially with ingredients for our cakes.

What did you learn this week?

Cristina talked to us about profit, she explained how we needed to budget and cost out what we were going to make. She showed us a spreadsheet to help us cost things out.
We looked at the 5p's for our event and came up with good ideas for all of them. We now need to put them into practise!

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it hard to decide and agree on whether we had a stall selling products & what we will to sell on our stall!
We need some more details e.g. recipes before we can start costing things out.

Week 7

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been busy creating the cool creative stall crafts. We have asked everyone in school to help make crafts. We have been thinking about making prices for: entry, cakes/biscuits, tea, coffee etc. We have been getting some really good responses from our letters, we have had donations from Sainsburys, Tebay Services, PTA, Pine Tree Garden Centre, The Pot Place. Abbi from bake off is coming to help us make cakes and we have gathered together some bingo prizes for the game.

What did you learn this week?

Some of us have been learning how to make worry worms. We learnt about making a profit with entry and refreshment fees.
Some of us went to the staff meeting to ask the staff which classes would make which crafts.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it difficult to organise who is doing what craft and it was super hard to make worry worms for the stall.
It was nerve wracking going to the staff meeting!

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have decided on our jobs for the evening: door people; welcomer/ announcer etc.Another job was to go shopping to buy the ingredients for the baking and spend the money vouchers the shop donated to us. We have finished the crafts. Also, we made gingerbread men with the bake off star Abbi after we invited her to our school to bake with us - it was awesome. The younger classes have been involved in making crafts and decorating the biscuits that we made earlier. We will be making scones and butterfly buns tomorrow so that they stay as fresh as they possibly can be ready to serve.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to select people for their preferred job on the night and we also learnt how to make delicious gingerbread biscuits for the cake and biscuits and drinks stall. We learnt how to adjust the prices because when we went shopping it was more expensive than we first imagined.

What did you find difficult this week?

It was difficult when a group of us went shopping to Scotmid Co-op.it was shockingly expensive! It cost £50 but the shop had donated 5 X £10 vouchers to spend at the shop for the event.

Week 9

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we hosted are event. It went great loads of people came. We were very busy on the cake stall. The cool creatures stall sold very well and the people that came got very excited and spent a lot of money. We communicated very well with all of our guests. The bingo tickets were selling very quickly and everybody had a great time. At the end of all this fun we then wrote some letters and we posted them!! The games were all being played and our bingo callers were a great and loud. The coffee and juice were great and lots of people liked them.

What did you learn this week?

That lots more people can arrive at our event. You can always make more money than you think!! That we needed to have good team work to get organised.

What did you find difficult this week?

It was hard to speak in front of a lot of people. We needed to remember a lot of things on the event day. We were worried when people started to arrive as we couldn’t fit any one else in!!

For pupils to answer:

In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?

We have loved taking part in Bright Stars, it has taught us so much about business & been a great challenge. We have enjoyed making a difference to our community & will spend our money wisely!

For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?

Our children have been fully committed to their Bright Stars business. It has been brilliant seeing them flourish, make independent choices and lead the way with their project. They have been an amazing team and have had to learn lots about the skills of compromise. It has been amazing how much support they have had from local businesses who have donated resources and time. The children wrote wonderful letters to local businesses and it was just brilliant to see the children's reactions to such positive responses. Welcoming a Bake Off celebrity into school was amazing - all the children's own idea! The event itself was so well supported and well run by the children and they raised so much more money than any of expected!
It has been an amazing experience that will hopefully have a long term impact on our children's futures. When we asked the children if we should do it again in the future, the resounding response was YES definitely!!
