Week 1

Team name: Fruity Tooty

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we decided on our healthy snack stall name. We all voted and the winner was Fruity Tooty. We put together a rota so that we had children working on our stall every day at break time. Each day we set up our stall and then we sold our snacks. We really enjoyed selling our products. We were good at working out the change. During this week we have noticed which healthy snacks have been popular and sold well. We also wrote down which snacks didn't sell well.

What did you learn this week?

This week Mel (our business partner) came into school. She told us all about what a business is. We learned what is meant by a product and a service. She taught us about what makes a business successful and we learned about the 5Ps of business which are product, people, promotion, price and place

What did you find difficult this week?

On the first day we didn't have enough change. We had to make sure we had change for the next day.

We noticed that the fruit wasn't selling very well so we reduced our fruit order for next week.

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have continued to run our Fruity Tooty stall. We have received some fruit donations. Yoghurts were sold this week too, which were popular. In our group we designed and created a sign that says Fruity Tooty. We will display this above our stall in the hall to advertise our business.
Some of us have also been writing letters to different shops and businesses in Wigton to ask for donations to help us with our healthy snack stall.

What did you learn this week?

This week we talked about why a business should have a logo. We also learned that it should be memorable, simple and clear. It must also be appropriate for the product that is being sold. We all designed a logo for our business and we will vote for our favourite next week.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it difficult to sell the fruit, most people were buying bread sticks and rice cakes. We have decided to make fruit smoothies at the end of the week to make sure we still make a profit.

Week 3

Tell us what you have been doing this week

During our visit from Mel (our business partner) we talked about the United Nations global sustainability goals and how we could help to improve some of these through our business. We came up with lots of ideas such as recycling the cardboard from the items that are sold on our stall, making sure all the rubbish either goes in the recycling bin or normal bin and no litter is lying in the playground. We also talked about how we could try to persuade more people to eat our healthy snacks.

With the money raised we want to buy a memory bench. We looked at examples and voted for our favourite.

What did you learn this week?

Mel told us about the United Nations. We learned about the global sustainability goals such as no poverty and climate action. We talked about some of the problems that countries have trying to reach the goals.

What did you find difficult this week?

Children have been buying 10 bread sticks - not enough left for everyone. We limited it to 5 each.

We had apples left - we quartered them and sold them cheaper. We sold most of them this way.

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we received a donation from Lidl of £25 so two of us went shopping to buy some snacks for our stall. We bought things that we knew had sold well but we also wanted to try some new healthy snacks too. When we got back to school we had to look to see how much we bought the food for and then divide that by the number in the pack. We then had to decide how much we were going to add on to make a profit.

Mr Allman came into to see us. We told him what have been doing and he gave us some ideas about how to sell more goods like selling 2 for the price of 1. We can try this next week.

What did you learn this week?

When we were shopping we had to look to see how much each food item cost and then we had to calculate how much the total cost was. We helped each other and used a notebook to keep the amounts in. As we were going around the shop we also had to make sure we didn't spend over £25.

What did you find difficult this week?

We had lots of bananas left over and didn't want them to go to waste or lose a profit. We asked the kitchen ladies to make us some banana bread. This sold really well and we still made a good profit

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we decided to branch out to increase our profit. We took our stall to Wigton Infants. Before we went, we worked as a team to decide which products we should take to sell. We looked back to see which items had been the most popular and made a list of these. This helped us to decide. We also wanted to make sure that we had a range of cheaper and expensive products so that if anyone only came with 10p they would still be able to buy something. Before we went, we sent a price list so that the children there could see what snacks we were bringing and how much they cost.

What did you learn this week?

To be patient and explain things clearer with younger customers. Some of them were shy and didn't know what they wanted. It took them a long time to decide. At first we both served the same customer - we had to change because we had a long queue - we both then served a customer each.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it difficult when the younger children put their money straight into the pot. We couldn't count how much they had put in or know how much change was needed. We had to ask them to stop.

Here we are counting how much money we had made. We had to remember to subtract the £5 float. We made a profit of £17.85

Week 6 - half term

Week 7

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we met with Mel (our business partner) and we talked about the sustainability goals that we are working on in our business. She also helped us to understand how to manage the money in our business.

We also put together some information advertising the 'Phunky Foods' healthy snacks that we will be making and selling at our sale after school next week.

What did you learn this week?

We learned what finance is coming in and out of our business. We learned what is meant by income, expenditure (costs) and profit. Mel also taught us how to calculate our profit so far.

What did you find difficult this week?

Difficult to know how many of each healthy snack we should make to sell at our sale next week. To help, we sent a tally chart around classes to see which item children would like to buy. This helped

Here is an example of the money management sheet for our Social Enterprise. We added the donations with the healthy snacks income. We then took away the costs and then we had our profit.

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we worked with Phunky Foods to make our own healthy snacks. We made 100 mini strawberry cheesecakes and 50 pea and mint smash ups with wholemeal pitta bread in one afternoon. We then sold them with our other healthy snacks to parents, children and other family members after school at our OPAL open afternoon. To make these, we learned lots about how to use a knife safely and how to cut strawberries carefully. Susan from Phunky Foods told us how many portions of fruit and veg we should eat each day and why. We cleaned up and washed all of the dishes too.

What did you learn this week?

We learned about Food Hygiene and how important it is to follow the food rules when preparing food. Some of these included tying our hair back, taking off jewellery and washing our hands thoroughly with hot soapy water.

What did you find difficult this week?

Making all of our snacks in one afternoon. We had to work as a team like on a conveyor belt each with a different job.

Keeping up with all the customers at the end of the day and refilling supplies.

Week 9

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we decided to make a Powerpoint presentation and share information with our classes about sustainability. In this, we talked about the United Nation goals, what sustainability is and explained why we decided to focus our enterprise on zero hunger. We shared information about the worst affected areas of hunger in the world and we discussed some of the reasons why it is difficult to reach the target of zero hunger in these areas. At the end of our presentation, we answered questions that anyone had.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to put together a Powerpoint presentation that included transitions to make it interesting. We also learnt that we had to be careful with the amount of snacks that we bought because it was our last week. We didn't want to be left with any snacks after Friday and lose any profit.

What did you find difficult this week?

We learnt that when we were speaking in front of the class and sharing lots of information it was difficult for everyone in our class to hear us. We had to make sure that we spoke clearly and loudly.

For pupils to answer:

In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?

It has given us an experience to what it is like to work as an adult and it has opened our minds about what we can achieve now and in the future.

For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?

Huge impact in school:
* camaraderie - the children have built up a trust and friendship between each other
* provided an opportunity to meet new people across school
* children who have not had breakfast have accessed the healthy snacks
* working together as team - listening and showing respect to others
* working together as a team / class / school - sharing ideas, discussions, responding to marketing questions, etc.
* created a buzz at break times and a feeling of 'togetherness'
* greater awareness of the United Nations, sustainability and what they do to try to improve global issues.
* children now share and speak more confidently in front of adults and groups
