Week 1

Team name: The Derwent Hive

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we had our initial meeting with Sarah, she spoke to us about different businesses and what the difference between a product and a service is. We had a great time and we learnt a lot about businesses!

We talked about different ideas and had a big brainstorming session where we narrowed down some ideas. We also came up with our business name - The Derwent Hive. We came up with a few ideas for our business but we planned to work on these next week with Claire!

What did you learn this week?

We learned about different types of businesses and social enterprises.

What did you find difficult this week?

It was difficult to get all of our ideas out and decide on just one or two ideas since we all had such good ideas! We would need to work we a team to decide on our final idea.

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we met with Claire to discuss our ideas. We told her about our ideas and she helped us to narrow them down to one idea which we all loved.

She told us about the different parts of a business and the different teams which we would need to decide on.

We designed our logo and looked at each others ideas.

What did you learn this week?

We learned how to draw a logo with a business name and a memorable icon, we also learnt the importance of voting so that everyone’s opinion was taken on board.

We also looked at how to make our business a success and we thought about our connections in the community

What did you find difficult this week?

It was difficult to design a logo that had our name and a good design, we all had very different ideas and we neeeded to narrow these down to get one simple idea.

Week 3

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we were very busy! We made our Bee Bombs. First, we needed to work out the best method of making bee bombs (we decided to use air drying clay as it would mean that we could make our bee bombs faster!).

Then it was time to start making, it was a beautiful sunny day so we sat out on the school field and made our bee bombs (with the help of Claire and Rachel).

What did you learn this week?

We learnt a lot about taking turns and working together, since we all needed to use the same materials we had to give each other time to gather materials and make our bombs before we could do our own.

What did you find difficult this week?

It was quite tricky to get all the bee bombs the same size, some of us struggled to make our bombs in a perfect circle, so we had to go back over some of them and remould the bombs.

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We had a visit from the local garden centre (Claire very kindly organised this) we did a pitch to tell the visitor all about our bee bombs and asked her to donate some materials to us - we managed to get some compost, seeds and plant pots donated! This was brilliant as it meant we did not have to buy as much produce to make our bee bombs.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt that it is important to get as much produce donated to save our seed money for other things, because we got some things donated we didn't need to spend the seed money that we got from cforlp. This meant we could get nicer packaging for our bee bombs.

What did you find difficult this week?

It was tricky to plan our presentation and get all of the important facts written down to pitch to the garden centre, because of this we had to work really hard to think about what we needed to say.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We had a special visit from Raegan from the Wildlife Trust. She told us all about her job and what she needed to do day-to-day, the things they worked on and she even invited us to visit us her at work to do some pond dipping. We gave her some bee bombs to plant at the site and we are excited to get some updates on how they are doing!

What did you learn this week?

We learnt a lot about Raegan's job, we didn't know that there were so many different types of birds that lived so near to us. She talked to us about different wildflowers and weeds and how they help animals and how we can do things in school or in our gardens to protect animals.

What did you find difficult this week?

We had a lot of orders coming in, so we needed to think about how we could get all our products packaged up and sent out on time.

Week 7

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have a very exciting event coming up. We are going to pitch at a BECBC event on Wednesday, and we even have our own stall at the event. There are 6 of us going, and we are very excited to tell everyone about our exciting product!

What did you learn this week?

We were selling lots of bee bombs, we sold 152 bee bombs! We learned a lot about leadership, it means that you are not telling somebody something, you are asking them.

What did you find difficult this week?

It was difficult to speak in front of lots of different people and talking to them about the bee bombs. But at the end we got asked lots of questions about the bee bombs, we really enjoyed this!

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

Sarah and Rachel came in to visit this week, and we looked at how much money we had made overall. We worked out what we had sold at the BECBC event and how much profit it had given us, then we completed our orders from in school, delivered our bee bombs to parents who had ordered in school.

We then had a talk about giving our money to charity, and we made a mindmap with all of the charities we knew about - we then decided that because we work closely with the foodbank anyways, and we knew about the amazing work that they do, we thought that would be the perfect charity to donate to!

What did you learn this week?

We learnt a little bit more about the food bank and the things that they did. We learnt about budget and profit and how finances in a business work. It was quite a tricky week, but those of us who are more confident at maths helped everyone!

What did you find difficult this week?

The finance sheet was a bit complicated, but we worked together to get it right.

Week 9

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we finalised our last orders and started to review and reflect on everything we had done so far. It has been a very fun few weeks and we have learned a lot from Rachel and Claire, and from each other.

What did you learn this week?

This week we have looked at our finance spreadsheet as a class, and we discussed how our costs needed to be subtracted from our income to work out our profit. We then talked about how we could donate part of this to charity, and the other part could be used in school somehow (we haven't decidedhow)

What did you find difficult this week?

It was quite tricky for us to understand our finances, we had to have a bit of help to add together everything that we had spent, and then working out how much of a profit we made.

For pupils to answer:

In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?

Bright Stars has been a lot of fun and we have learned a lot about working together as a team to support our friends.

For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?

The programme has allowed the class to work together to make an impact. We chose something that we really cared about (saving the bees), and then we took this idea and worked together to come up with the bee bomb! With Claire, Rachel, Sarah and Lucy's help we were able to develop our idea, create the bee bomb, package it, present it to a panel of people at a BECBC event, and sell the bee bomb to a wider audience. The rest of our small school are very excited and supportive of our project and we have been able to plant lots of bee bombs (and hopefully help lots of bees and other pollinators). The children have had a lot of fun, learned a lot about businesses, leadership and the importance of working together as a team.
