Week 1

Team name: N/A

Tell us what you have been doing this week

A group of Year 2 children met Vicki this week from Jigsaw and Eden Valley Hospice. She talked about her role and setting and explained what we will be doing as part of Bright Stars as well as what a social enterprise is. We had some questions to ask and we worked together to think of ideas for our business. Each group created a list and we shared our suggestions with each other - they were all very food orientated!
We have not yet decided on our business name.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt all about Jigsaw and the important work they do to help others. We also discovered that every business helps people in some way.
We discussed the different job roles you might find in a business and why each one is important.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it a bit challenging to think about the purpose of our own business and what it could provide for people, but we are starting to build on our ideas.

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week in our session with Vicki, we explored different ideas for our enterprise. We built on the ideas we shared last week and discussed including food and baking, as well as making or selling drinks.
We also explored the idea of selling toys and clothes. As a group, we decided we are going to ask our parents and carers for donations that we could sell at a future coffee morning or afternoon to help support our enterprise.

What did you learn this week?

We learned that an enterprise can often be ongoing and include multiple sales or events over time. After discussing our ideas as a group, we decided that we would focus on planning and delivering one big event together.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it challenging to decide on the type of event we would like to organise, as well as narrowing down the products and items we want to sell.

Week 3

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We have been working together to decide on a name for our enterprise. We tried to think of ideas that were unique and not already in use, which we found challenging at times. However, we decided to link our name to the Inglewood badge and the meaning behind it.
We focused on the deer symbol because, before our school was built, the area was woodland. We felt this represented us and our enterprise really well and helped us create a meaningful identity for our business.

What did you learn this week?

We learned the importance of communication and listening when working as part of a team. We were all excited to share our ideas, and at time we began talking over each other. This helped us understand why taking turns, listening carefully and respect is important when making group decisions.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it difficult to come up with a business name that linked well to the products and items we are planning to sell. As a group, we shared different ideas and worked together.

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we worked with Vicki to decide on our individual roles within the business. We discussed what each role involves and the qualities needed to be successful in them. We shared ideas, talked about our strengths, and helped each other identify which roles would suit us best. We are all very happy with the choices we made.

We also designed logos for our enterprise to reflect our business name and ideas. Everyone showed lots of creativity, and all of our logos looked fantastic.

What did you learn this week?

We learned about the importance of having a strong, recognisable logo. We discussed famous logos we could easily remember, including McDonald's and Starbucks, and talked about what makes them effective.
We learned how to work together as a team to vote for the logo that would best represent us.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it difficult to vote fairly for our logo. We wanted our own logo's to win.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we met with Vicki to discuss our finances. We got to look at a £50 note, not many of us had seen one before!
We made a list of the things we will need to make our enterprise possible. We then split them into things we can buy and things we can borrow from around school. This will help us save money.

What did you learn this week?

We learned that although £50 is a lot of money, we still need to budget carefully for things we need to buy.
Vicki told us how important it is to make sure we only buy necessary things.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it difficult deciding what we need to buy, including what we want to bake and how we are going to get things donated.

The children were amazed by the £50 note.

Week 7

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we have been busy preparing for our upcoming event. We worked together to plan the layout of the dining hall, carefully deciding where to place the cake stall, coffee station, and the toy tombola to make the event welcoming and easy for visitors to enjoy. We also discussed the key information that needed to be included in our letter to parents and carers, helping to ensure everyone has the details they need about the day.

What did you learn this week?

That planning an event takes lots of organisation and teamwork. We discussed the importance of informing parents, arranging the layout, organising helpers and requesting donations. This helped us understand how much preparation goes into a successful event.

What did you find difficult this week?

- Deciding where everything should go in the hall.
- Agreeing on ideas as a group.
-Thinking about the needs of visitors and the information they need.
- How much we need to prepare in advance.

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we have been finalising our cake menu and deciding which delicious treats we would like to bake for our upcoming bake sale. We also designed eye-catching posters to display around school, helping to advertise the event. We carefully considered how to make our posters attractive and informative, using bright colours, clear information, and food-themed images to encourage people to come along and support us.
We also sent invitations to our parents and carers, sharing information about Bright Stars and all the hard work we have been doing. We were very excited to tell them about it.

What did you learn this week?

We learned about the importance of advertising and communication when organising an event. We discovered how posters and invitations can be used to share information with others and encourage people to attend and support our coffee morning,

What did you find difficult this week?

- Choosing which cakes to bake for our coffee morning.
- Designing posters that were both informative but eye- catching.
- Thinking about our audience and what they might need to know and like.

Week 9

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we planned and successfully completes our social enterprise coffee morning. We worked hard to prepare for the event by making signs, creating price lists and baking delicious cakes with our school chef. We also organised a support team to help us serve customers and sent letters home to invite parents and carers. On the day of the event, we welcomed lots of visitors and enjoyed serving our customers. The coffee morning was a great success, with huge queues and almost all of our cakes selling out. We are very proud of what we achieved.

What did you learn this week?

We learned about teamwork by working together to organise our coffee morning. We developed our enterprise skills by promoting the event. The importance of confidence and responsibility by helping to plan and run the event. We learned about money and budgeting when we were pricing the cakes.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found working under pressure difficult, as there were long queues of customers waiting to be served. Our toy tombola did not go ahead because we did not receive enough donations to run it.

For pupils to answer:

In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?

It has been a good experience and I have learned that running a business takes a lot of hard work. I do not want Bright stars to end.

For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?

It has had a significant positive impact on our school, as the children are now keen to organise coffee mornings and bake sales more frequently, which is something we have not done regularly in the past. They particularly enjoyed the opportunity to sit with their parents and other adults while also demonstrating their achievements. Serving customers allowed them to showcase their skills and see how successful their social enterprise has been.

Prize categories and reasons

Best team work, collaboration and leadership

Our children worked incredibly hard together throughout the project. When their leader was not always present , they showed independence by working with Vicki and then confidently feeding back their ideas, plans and progress. They supported each other, shared responsibility and worked as a team.

Best community engagement

Our coffee morning brought our school community together. We invited parents and carers and lots of people came to support us. The dining hall was full with just year 2 families! We were very excited to welcome everyone and raised £170 from year 2 along. Teachers told us it was the busiest ever!

Best logo and marketing campaign

Our children created a meaningful logo that reflects our school, its values and its history. They carefully considered the design and used it alongside eye-catching posters and letters to promote their coffee morning. Their campaign was highly successful, helping to attract so many visitors.
