Lifelong leadership learning in Cumbria

Our programmes aim to develop leaders at every stage of life, from primary pupils to adults, ultimately contributing to more resilient economies, sustainable incomes, and safer communities across Cumbria.

Bright Stars introduces primary-age children to leadership and social entrepreneurship from a young age. Through this programme, we nurture the leaders of tomorrow and empower pupils to think creatively, develop teamwork skills, and influence change in their communities by creating mini social enterprises with support from local businesses.

Become a strategic partner and help fund a school to take part.

Businesses are invited to dedicate just one hour per week for 12 weeks to mentor the next generation of change-makers either Spring/Summer and/or Autumn/Winter.

We’ll also support and train a small number of your team to become mentors, guiding children as they develop their enterprise ideas.

Outcomes & Impact

  • Young people feel better connected to their local communities with a sense of pride in place
  • Better links between schools and businesses, greater awareness of local jobs and careers
  • Nurturing entrepreneurial skills and aspirations in primary pupils
  • Youth Voice/Youth Empowerment

Helping them to develop their skills both creatively and confidently, learning about teamwork and leadership in a fun way, was incredibly satisfying for us as a business, and we feel we have had a real impact on their future and in shaping skills needed for our County.” Sharon Brook – North Lakes Hotel & Spa

Each year we ask businesses to help contribute to the running of the programme which costs around £1650 per school. We ask businesses depending on size to contribute which ranges from £750 to £2500 but we know this can be a barrier so we also seek grant funding and sponsorship for charities and smaller businesses who may wish to get involved but would find this funding model a barrier to engagement,

Funding enables us to grow the scheme across Cumbria and offer this opportunity to more young people.

Dream Placement is a six month leadership development programme for all 16-18 year olds across Cumbria, which for some young people will result in a week’s Dream Placement.

Become a strategic partner and help fund this 6-month programme that supports all applicants. You’ll also host a one-week leadership placement during February half term.

Businesses are invited to a selection event in December to interview candidates and choose at least one to host for a week-long placement during the February half term. CforLP can help match you with the right student and assist with structuring the placement week.

The Leading Change Programme enables us to engage with 11 to 18 year olds across Cumbria to inspire and nurture future aspirations and empower young people to make decisions, to make commitments and ultimately to make a difference to their communities. Working with Sellafield Ltd and funded by SIX (Social Impact Multiplied) in 2023, 2024 and 2025, the Leading Change Sustainability Campaign programme enabled young people from schools across West Cumbria to lead a campaign and raise awareness around key sustainability issues in their schools and communities.

Be a sponsor or business mentor. Leading Change seeks support to expand and inspire even more young people. We’re inviting businesses to sponsor the programme or to help shape the leaders of tomorrow by providing guidance and mentorship.

Being part of the Leading Change programme has been an amazing experience. I was very impressed with the development of the children in a short period of time. I have seen first hand in my own family that standard education does not fit every kid. I can see how this project gave the children a sense of purpose and achievement which isn’t present at normal lessons. Amaya Munoz – Student

“The opportunity to check out of the sometimes stressful world of work and help out the little guys.

I got into it for a few reasons;

  • The main reason being able to help out the little guys, it is massively rewarding and a privilege to be part of that moment when the penny drops and they get it.
  • It’s an opportunity to check out of, what can be a stressful world of work for a while and have fun.
  • It feels empowering and purposeful giving your time and efforts to helping others, so there’s a feel good factor to it.
  • The engineering industry has provided me with a great life and I’d recommend anyone to take up a career in engineering, the possibilities to what you might do and end up are limitless.
  • It’s an opportunity to see things differently, the little guys and the next generations can ask some great thought provoking questions which gives us an opportunity to think and see things differently.”
