More diverse businesses needed to help young people in South Cumbria benefit from Dream Placement opportunities

Young people from South Cumbria need more host companies to enable them to take part in the county’s unique Dream Placement programme designed to introduce them to the workplace and expand their career aspirations.

The programme which launches in September is designed and delivered by the Centre for Leadership Performance in partnership with employers schools and colleges. The 2026 programme will broaden the participation and opportunities still further with a more diverse range of companies taking part.

In addition to the dozens of companies supporting the scheme, extra funding from the Printers Inc Social Mobility Fund through Cumbria Community Foundation will enable no-cost participation by 6 additional hosts drawn from a more diverse range of companies including those involved in the arts, tourism, culture and creative sectors.

From September Cumbrians aged 16-18 are invited to apply for the opportunity to spend the February 2026 half-term break embedded with a company.  All of the applicants benefit from a selection process which gives everyone taking part important life skills and invaluable experience.

Executive Director Sarah Glass explains: “We continually seek to broaden the spectrum  of companies and young people taking part in Dream Placement.  The new support from the Printers Inc Social Mobility Fund means we can offer more diverse companies  the chance to connect with young people in South Cumbria on a unique level.

“There is no cost to the business and they simply need to demonstrate their willingness to give their placement the sort of experience of business and the workplace which has proved life-changing for so many of our candidates.”

Businesses from across South Cumbria, from Barrow-in-Furness and Kendal, through to Millom, Coniston and Windermere are eligible to benefit from the Printers Inc funded places.

Dream Placement is a 6 month leadership development programme which has given thousands of young people the chance to connect with potential employers and learn more about business while gaining workplace skills and  building confidence.

A unique collaboration between educators, businesses and young people, it offers essential leadership development opportunities for all young people applying, and helps them to make informed choices about their future.

Businesses which take part can connect with their future workforce, and showcase jobs and careers as they interact with young people.   At the same time staff who support the candidates gain valuable development opportunities.

Printers Inc funding is provided by the CN Group – proprietor of Cumbria Newspapers.  One of the key focus points for the fund is bringing young people and businesses together and equipping them for work.
