West Cumbria students take up sustainability challenge

Students in West Cumbrian schools are being challenged to take the lead on sustainable development and encourage positive change in their communities through the Leading Change-Sustainability Campaign funded by Sellafield Ltd.

The ‘Leading Change – Sustainability Campaign’ programme is funded by Sellafield Ltd which is partnering with the CforLP which will project-manage and deliver the initiative. Business mentors from Sellafield and other local companies will support the students throughout the programme to develop their sustainability campaign ideas.

Each participating school will receive £250 seed funding to create their campaigns which must be linked to the UN sustainable development goals.  They will then present their campaign proposals and each receive up to £1500 to turn their ideas into reality

The inclusive programme starts on October 31 and will last up to 12 weeks.  It supports young people to develop their leadership skills, provide opportunities for their voices to be heard on issues that matter most to them, and encourage them to lead change in local communities through their campaigns.

Executive Director Sarah Glass explains: “This programme is very much led by the young people who will own and shape the Sustainability Campaign plans based on the needs of their local communities, and is a further development of the Bright Stars ‘Male a Difference’ campaigns run by primary schools. It will inspire and empower a new generation of young people to make a difference to their local communities.”
