James from NSG helped us to understand what a business is

We decided which area of the enterprise we wanted to be involved with

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We had an introductory visit from our business partner, NSG Environmental. James came to our school, and explained how businesses are structured, and why each area is important for businesses to run smoothly.

We discussed all our ideas for a business. The children were very keen to 'help', and wanted to start a social enterprise that would have an impact. After hearing Trudy Harrison discuss the declining numbers of hedgehogs in a previous visit to our school, they decided this would be the area they wanted to focus on.

The children decided baking biscuits would be a good way to raise funds

What did you learn this week?

We learned what a social enterprise is.

We learned that the main 'departments' we needed for our social enterprise were:
* management
* finance
* marketing
* production

What did you find difficult this week?

Deciding on a final idea for our social enterprise.

Week 3

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we wanted to try and think about raising some more money, that we could then use to buy some food for hedgehogs, and donate to our chosen charity. As lots of children (and grown ups!) have already tried our original biscuits, we could try a different flavour. We conducted some market research in the form of a taste test to see what would be a 'best seller'.

What did you learn this week?

We learned how to carry out research, and why it is a good idea to ask lots of different people.

What did you find difficult this week?

Finding time to bake!

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we were set the task of designing a logo for our social enterprise. We looked at different logos for existing charities that support hedgehogs, and what made a 'good' logo. We decided that it was important to include our name (#protect the pricklies) and have a picture of a hedgehog too. We voted for our 2 favourites, and counted up the votes to find out who had the most, and would be selected as our logo.

What did you learn this week?

Why logos are important, and how they can help to share information to people.

What did you find difficult this week?

Deciding which logo was our favourite, and trying to pick the one we though represented our social enterprise the most, rather than voting for our friends.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week was very exciting for us all! We had a visit from Mel from Ani-Mel Haven, who came with her resident hedgehog to teach us all about hedgehogs. Ben from NSG came along too and asked lots of questions!
We learned lots, and would like to share our knowledge with others to help #protectthepricklies, but we're not sure how. This willl be a job for next week!

What did you learn this week?

This week we learned lots about how to protect hedgehogs and what you can do if you find a hedgehog that needs help.

What did you find difficult this week?

We didn't have any time to make biscuits this week, as Y2 were completing their SATs so we haven't made any money this week.

Week 6

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we had a visit from Rob and Marjaan. To try and help 'protect the pricklies', Rob built some hedgehog feeding stations/houses for us.

What did you learn this week?

Rob and Marjaan discussed how the houses would keep hedgehogs safe from predators, and how we could provide them with some food and water to help them when food and water is scarce. We thought about the best places to locate the houses and how we could make more simple versions at home using a box.
