Week 1
Team name: Asby Beetle Drives
Tell us what you have been doing this week
This week, we were introduced to the 5ps of business and the idea of a social enterprise. We have decided on our idea: a beetle drive event for the whole community, to raise money for a local charity (to be decided). This will stop people being lonely and raise money for a valuable cause.
What did you learn this week?
We learned that a social enterprise is a business that does something for people or the environment.
What did you find difficult this week?
We found it difficult to come up with a team name that we all liked! Eventually we settled on Asby Beetle Drives because it says what we are doing.

Week 4
Tell us what you have been doing this week
This week has been extremely busy, with a whole day's worth of time devoted to getting our project off the ground. First off, we played a beetle drive game and agreed on the rules/ format of the event. Next, we decided on teams and started to designate roles. Our marketing team have been drafting messages for our social media pages and designing a logo. The finance team has started to work with the headteacher on costs. The product team has started to design the playing cards which will be used.
What did you learn this week?
We learnt what a social enterprise is and how it can benefit people or the planet. We have decided that our social enterprise helps people because it brings the community together. Also, the event will be in aid of the Asby Tree Group, which is helping us with our outdoor classroom!
What did you find difficult this week?
We found it difficult deciding who would be on each team! Some children wanted to do the same role so a lot of compromise was needed!
Week 5
Tell us what you have been doing this week
This week, we have been working hard to prepare the product (beetle drive playing cards), marketing (logo and social media posts) and finances (ensuring that we are not spending more than £50 on our event).
We have been working together to make sure that we are all on the same page! For example, the marketing team's logo has to be a part of the playing card.
We have been visited by Keith Cooper, from the Asby Tree Group, so we could explain our project and tell him how our event will be in aid of their work (including our outdoor classroom).
What did you learn this week?
We learnt about sustainability and how best to achieve this. Although our playing cards are on paper, we have printed them on black and white paper. As well as this, our event is in aid of the Asby Tree Group, so trees will be planted as a result of our work!
What did you find difficult this week?
Our finance team found it difficult to get the information they needed, because our school business manager was not on site! This was frustrating because we wanted to make sure we were in budget.

Week 6
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We have been extremely busy getting ready for next week's event!
Our finance team are putting together a Tesco delivery order for teas, coffees and drinks, in time for a Sunday delivery. They have also costed to make sure we have enough for all of the products we need.
The marketing team have written letters to local businesses who donated items for the prizes and raffle.
The product team have been preparing playing cards and double checking we have the things (and the people) we need.
What did you learn this week?
We learnt about our business partner, Diffability, and the work they do with disabled children.
We learnt that own brands are cheaper than branded products and have a higher profit margin.
We learnt that we must check that photocopies are OK before printing them 100 times.
What did you find difficult this week?
We found choosing the tuck shop items tricky.
Also, some team leaders found managing younger pupils frustrating.
Week 7
Tell us what you have been doing this week
This was the week of the big event: Asby's Beetle Drive!
We have been very busy writing scripts, preparing resources, setting up stalls and getting everything ready.
What did you learn this week?
We learnt how important it is to get things ready well in advance! We don't feel stressed because we've been getting things ready for a few weeks now.
What did you find difficult this week?
Some of us found it difficult working to a time limit. We wanted to spend more time on our posters but couldn't!

Week 8
Tell us what you have been doing this week
On Friday night, we had our beetle drive event!
Turnout was around 70 people, which is amazing for such a small village.
Although it took time for everyone to learn the game, eventually it ran very well and people got to play with people they normally wouldn't have spoken to.
The raffle worked well and the tuck shop sold about half of its products.
What did you learn this week?
We learnt more about profit! We took £258.00 in total, although we borrowed £43.50 from the school so we could make more money on the tuck shop. Taking away the £50, we made a total of £164.50!!
What did you find difficult this week?
On the night, some children got excited, ate too many sweets and forgot about their jobs; some adult help was needed.
Week 9
Tell us what you have been doing this week
This week, we have been working to make sure that everything is completed, ready for the 'close of business'! We have been checking our final figures and trying to sell-off our tuck shop stock at other community events, which raised an additional £9.
What did you learn this week?
Again, we learnt how important it is to be organised! We have everything written down which has made writing the final reports much easier. We also learnt that we have a wonderful community, that is happy to support us with our ventures.
What did you find difficult this week?
We found calculating the final figures tricky - Excel was not our friend this week! However, we persevered and have a final figure of £203.51.
For pupils to answer:
In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?
"It has been good because I won the game!"
"It has been good because we've got to learn about costings and money."
"We got everyone in the community together!"
For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?
This programme has given our children to choose a project and follow it through to the end. They have learnt about the 5ps of business, the UN sustainability goals and, most importantly, the skills needed when working as part of a team: compassion, good listening and compromise.
The children are exceptionally proud of what they have achieved (as they should be).
