Week 1

Team name: Thornhill Thunderbolts

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We have met the team from Nuclear Waste Services who spoke about business and what being in a business is like. We watched a video about businesses and spoke about the individual jobs Jasmin, Emily and Erin do at NWS. We looked at examples of different businesses, both small and large. Discussed jobs and businesses and the 5 P’s of business. We spoke about McVities as a business and had a go at completing our own 5 P’s mind map thinking about product, people and how promotion works for businesses. We have began thinking about our own product ideas.

What did you learn this week?

The 5 P’s of business are product, people, promotion, price and place. We also discussed what difference the product or services businesses provide can make to the community. Looked at McVities and discussed the pricing of the products they provide and the difference this can make.

What did you find difficult this week?

Completing the 5 P’s mind map was difficult as we didn’t know the answers to some of the sections. We had ideas of the prices but weren’t sure and what difference this could make to people.

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been working on our own social enterprise ideas! We spoke about social enterprise and what that means; we went through examples of local social enterprises that are making a difference to their communities. A lot of us didn't even realise there were so many so close to us. We recapped over the 5 Ps of business and used these to apply them to our own social enterprise ideas. After working in pairs we shared our ideas as a class and ended the session on a vote for our favourite idea. In the end it has been decided our Bright Stars project will be a Community Fair!

What did you learn this week?

We learned about social enterprise and what exactly a social enterprise is. Lots of us just thought it was a business like any other. We didn't realise that it gives something back to the communities it serves.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found agreeing on an idea difficult! Some of us struggled to come up with a social enterprise idea that was realistic with just £50 to spend.

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We have been working with Jasmin and the team from NWS to look at our project in more detail. This week we decided on our final logo for our project; we also looked at and applied for different job roles based on our own personal skills. We started putting together our business plan to really focus on what we are going to do at our Community Fair and how we can do this with just £50! We looked at all our ideas and narrowed them down for what stalls we would have at the fair. After this we looked at some prices to be able to make a profit and the dates etc to do our fair by.

What did you learn this week?

We have learnt more about ourselves and our personal skills. When we were completing our job applications we needed to decide which role we would be best suited for by narrowing down our personal skills. We also found out how hard it is to build a business plan!

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it difficult to listen and agree with each other. We spoke over each other during our business plan. Some of us also found it difficult to narrow down which job we’d be best suited to.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have had our last session with Nuclear Waste Services to discuss profit and marketing. We had to have a change of plan to our original Community Fair idea so we thought about our community and what they enjoy… our final service is a Bingo Night! After finalising these details we decided on the date of the 5th December and to hold an evening event to open the opportunity up to our working families and wider community. After the session we realised how important it is to have effective marketing for our service to be popular and generate a profit for us.

What did you learn this week?

Marketing is very important to create a profit from our service. We also learned that social enterprises take a lot more organisation than we first realised! It is hard work but as everything is coming together it looks very worth it.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found working as a team difficult at first as we needed to work together on the marketing and with our marketing team to create effective advertisement to make sure everyone knows about the event!

some

Working hard to come up with marketing ideas.

Week 6

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been thinking about resources we will need for our Bingo Night. We made a list of items that we need to buy and got the lovely Mrs Hartman to order them for us. After this we finalised our letter to send out to businesses to ask for any donations they would be able to offer for Bingo and raffle prizes. We also decided on organising a non-uniform day in school next week to gather items to create our own prize hampers too.

What did you learn this week?

Organising these events is very hard work and we didn’t realise how much work actually goes behind the scenes! We have been working hard to finalise the details and resources we will need for our Bingo night while keeping a close eye on our £50 budget!

What did you find difficult this week?

We are finding it difficult to decide on a charity to give half of our profits to!

Week 7

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have finalised the details for our Bingo Night next week. We are very excited to get everything underway. Our resources are ordered and we are slowly collecting prizes and we have had lots of lovely donations from our local community too! We have enjoyed a whole school non-uniform day this week in order to gather items to create prize hampers which everyone has enjoyed! We’ve got our posters around the village and come up with the floor plans for the layout of the room on the night.

What did you learn this week?

We have learned how the organisation of our event is very important to how well it will go. It has been important to make sure we are organised so the event runs smoothly and we can generate as much profit as possible.

What did you find difficult this week?

Just how organised we need to be! When our teachers aren’t doing the organising it’s harder than it looks.

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week is the week of our Bingo Night! We've been working hard on the final preparations to get everything ready for the night. We've continued spreading the word and got the hampers and prizes ready. Everyone knows their role for the evening and it is sure to be a huge success!

What did you learn this week?

That these kind of events take a lot more preparation than we first thought! It's not as easy as it seems to organise a community event.

What did you find difficult this week?

Making sure evrything was well prepared for the evening was hard work. There was a lot to sort out for the night to make sure it ran smoothly.
