Bright Stars - School Update

Beckstone Primary School

Supported by

Social Enterprise Summary

We have decided to raise money to support the building of our new adventure playground, which is being built in memory of one of our pupils - Arabella Kelly. We have organised a range of activities and events and hope to raise as much money as possible, so that we can create an amazing playground where children can find joy, calmness and can reflect in a tranquil and welcoming space.

Week 1

Team name: Arabella's Angels

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we decided on our team name and came up with ideas for what we could include in our logo. We worked together to combine everyone's ideas to make a logo which we thought was eye-catching and captured all the things that Arabella loved, such as: butterflies, bright colours such as blue and purple. We also included an image of a playground which links to our goal of raising as much money as possible to support the building of an adventure playground in Arabella's memory. We met with our business partners Workington Town Community Trust to share our ideas and work collaboratively.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to use a compass when drawing out our logo designs on paper. We also learnt how to use Canva to create posters and logos.

What did you find difficult this week?

Some of us found using Canva really tricky. Luckily Debbie (one of our business partners) was on hand to give us some help. We shared the skills we had learnt to make bold and beautiful posters.

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we hosted our Pumpkin decorating session. 30 children from across the school purchased and painted a wooden Pumpkin outline. We also had Halloween music, drinks and snacks for them to enjoy. Debbie from Workington Town came and supported our craft session and helped us out with making up our sweet cones.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to support younger children - we made excellent helpers in the craft session and the Pumpkin designs were phenomenal! Some of our older club members took charge of the event, taking the register, handing out drinks and providing different paints for those who needed them.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found keeping up with our Halloween orders challenging. Luckily, Miss McMinn and Debbie helped us to make up our sweet cones ready to distribute to customers on Friday!

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we made our Hot chocolate cones ready to sell them to our School Community as part of our Christmas Product range!

What did you learn this week?

We thought carefully about serving sizes and how much hot chocolate powder would be needed to make a good sized Hot Chocolate. We had to be very careful when filling our cones up, as it was easy to spill the cocoa! We also had to be careful as some of the cones were splitting at the sides!

What did you find difficult this week?

We found measuring out our hot chocolate powder difficult! We used spoons to make sure everyone's product was the same size.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We got to work making lots of sweet cones and started to figure out how to make our Snowmen Key rings with the materials we needed.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt about perseverance and the importance of keeping on trying, even when things aren't going to plan. Through perseverance and determination, we were able to create a snowman keyring that we were really pleased with!

What did you find difficult this week?

Threading the different parts of the snowmen was really difficult, especially as the twine kept splitting, making it difficult to thread each part on successfully.

Week 6

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We started to make our Reindeer Food, as we had already sold quite a few and needed to fulfil our orders! To make the Reindeer Food, we discussed which glitter would look best in our product. We decided on silver glitter and snowflakes to make our food sparkle! We then carefully mixed up a batch of Reindeer Food, being careful to get the right balance of glitter and oats.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to make reindeer food and thought carefully about our product sizes. We wanted to make sure our materials went a long way as well as ensuring our customers got value for money.

What did you find difficult this week?

Pouring the oats into our packaging was pretty tricky. We decided to do the pouring over a bowl, as this helped us to make sure that we didn't lose as much product on the floor!

Week 7

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We have started to think about the different categories we would like to be considered for in the competition. We also discussed the key skills of Bright Stars and how we thought we had shown them. We all agreed that one of our members (Sophie) had naturally stepped into the role of team leader and was really supportive to everyone, offering advice and stepping in to help if people were finding a task particularly tricky.

What did you learn this week?

We revisited the UN goals for sustainability and considered which ones would link best to our Social Enterprise. We decided on 'educed inequalities' as we felt our project really showed the determination and resilience Arabella showed in her fight and this was something we wanted to honour.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it challenging to balance all of the different product orders which we have received. Whilst it was great that our products were so popular, we found it difficult to delegate all the tasks.

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we hosted a Christmas Disco! We had to think carefully about how we were going to organise this and decided on two separate Discos, one for KS1 children and one for KS2 children. We discussed and decided on the snacks we would offer and priced these up. We then decided on a fair price for the tickets, ensuring that they were affordable and profitable too! 180 children bought tickets to our Disco which is amazing!

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to budget for snacks, considering which options would best meet our needs before purchasing them. We also did lots of Maths to work out if we had enough snacks for all the children who were attending, as we didn't want anyone to be left out! We also made sure there were spares!

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it difficult to complete all of our tasks this week. As on top of the Disco, we needed to continue to distribute our Christmas product orders. We worked hard to get on top of everything!

Week 9

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we hosted a Cracker craft Workshop. To make this successful, we had to purchase the products needed to make the Crackers. We decided to buy a cracker kit, which meant that we had the cracker outlines, the ribbon, the jokes and a hat all ready made for us. Debbie donated some chocolates for us to put inside our crackers too! We had great fun making the crackers and the Bright Stars reps were really good at helping the younger children to put their crackers together, as it was a little fiddly!

What did you learn this week?

We learnt the importance of preparation and how being prepared in advance can save us a lot of time during the activity. We were so relieved that we had set out the classroom beforehand, as this helped us to make sure the craft session could start on time!

What did you find difficult this week?

At the beginning, putting the crackers together was pretty difficult. However, we persevered and decided to add tape to ensure they held together tightly!

Week 10

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been reflecting on our achievements and celebrating how far we have come. We enjoyed talking about what we’ve learnt and that we have developed our teamwork, resilience and craft skills over the course of the seven weeks.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt about the importance of recording our profits as we go along as this has made the final week much easier.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it difficult to remember all the things we have achieved, because there were so many things to be proud of!
