Week 1

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we discussed and made our decision to run after-school clubs and performances/presentations at the end of the sessions. We split into two groups, one to run the dance club and one to run the football. Each group worked on writing a letter to the parents about their club. We also wrote a letter to our parents explaining Bright Stars 2024 and asking for their permission to stay after school on Thursdays for 8 weeks. We started to write an 8-week overview for our football club and also started to choreograph two dances for Year 3 and Year 4. We also decided on a local charity.

What did you learn this week?

We learned what needs to be included in a letter to parents about an after-school club and a letter to our parents too. We looked at the format of a letter and the text features so that we could write our own. We also learned about planning for an after-school club.

What did you find difficult this week?

Remembering everything we needed to include in a letter and having it a good standard to go out to the parents. It was also tricky planning out our clubs and allocating sections to everyone.

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we have been practising our presentations to deliver to Year 1 and Year 2 for our after-school football club and to Year 3 and Year 4 for our after-school dance club. Each of the club teams watched each other to check the presentation and help them to improve it where possible. We invited the year groups to watch us in our classroom and had our letters ready to give out to the children and answered any questions which they had. We also spent some time designing our certificates to give out and planning our dance and football sessions ready for next week.

What did you learn this week?

To listen to each other in order to complete a suitable presentation to deliver to the other year groups. To speak clearly and with confidence when giving a presentation and to show enthusiasm for our after-school groups so we get as many children attending as possible.

What did you find difficult this week?

Some of us found it tricky to listen to other peoples' ideas in our groups and get on with each other all of the time. Some children know this is something they need to improve during the task.

Week 3

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we have been finishing planning the overview for our clubs and changing little parts of the dances and the football lesson plan. Once we had changed the little bits, we were getting ready for our first lesson! We calculated the number of children who were coming and, altogether, there are over 50 Askam Villlage School pupils involved in our clubs.

What did you learn this week?

We have learned that keeping control of the younger children is more difficult than we first thought. Also, keeping the younger children focused and making sure they have fun was more difficult than we thought it would be.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it difficult keeping the younger children under control and listening to us so that they know what they're doing. We also discovered that the younger ones are hard work to deal with sometimes

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, Dave talked to us about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) on our session 6 Powerpoint. We talked about it and Dave explained about our task for the week. The main goal we chose was number 3, Good health and well-being. Also, our second session of football/dancing clubs went better than last week!

What did you learn this week?

We learned that the UNSDGs are helping the world be a better environment/place by 2030.

What did you find difficult this week?

That the younger kids are still hard work to control, listen to us and have fun all at the same time! We are still perfecting the timing of our football sessions and trying to speed up each element.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we did the stretches that the Year 1 and Year 2 children enjoyed. Our warm-up was a little bit different - we changed from shark tig to domes and dishes which was great fun. For our football skill we did tackling which everyone enjoyed. The dances are coming along well and some pupils are even practising outside during their own playtimes.

What did you learn this week?

How hard it is to teach year 1 and 2 and get the dance groups to move in the same direction.

What did you find difficult this week?

Some children needed a reminder to listen.

Week 7

Tell us what you have been doing this week

The stretches went well. The warm-up was different as we were running from one fence to the other. Our skill was tackling again. The dance went well - they are picking the moves up quickly and we think they are nearly ready for the final show. We have also been sourcing trophies for our presentation for the parents.

What did you learn this week?

That sometimes plans have to change quickly due to the weather outside!

What did you find difficult this week?

Having the football group inside in the hall when the stage is also out was a challenge for us.

some

Finding trophies for our presentation.

some

Working out how many trophies to buy from our profit.

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, we have been looking at possible dates to invite the parents to come and watch our football presentation and dance show. We have been deciding on a suitable ticket cost and looking at the trophies we want to award and where to buy them at the best price.

What did you learn this week?

Finding a spare afternoon/evening at the end of the summer term is an interesting task - it's very busy indeed!

What did you find difficult this week?

Agreeing on the amount of trophies to award and what they should be for in each club.

Week 9

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We decided to have two plans for our football session, this week. We wrote an inside and an outside plan, just incase! This was a good plan after last week and meant we were organised for both sessions. As it turned out, the weather was glorious so we managed to take the football club on our school field which they thoroughly enjoyed. We had two great games using the goalposts and football pitches and managed to tire everyone out too! The dance groups had their last sessions in the hall and the classroom before moving on to the stage next week. We sorted out dance positions for our show.

What did you learn this week?

We learned how to run a session on the school field which was a first for us. We needed a whistle for this session due to the large space available to us. The Year 1 and Year 2 loved playing on the field and they are hoping one of our remaining sessions can be on there again.

What did you find difficult this week?

Running the sessions in a large outdoor space was great fun but required a different type of organisation.

For pupils to answer:

In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?

It's been the BEST part of being in Year 5! We love running our clubs and can't wait for our show for the parents. We've had lots of fun planning and running our clubs and organising the show.

For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?

It has been great to see my Year 5 pupils plan for and deliver their clubs every week and how they have improved. They have been very careful with the money they have made and where they have needed to spend it. They have thought carefully about who to award their certificates to every week and what is important to them. Year 5 have learned to sort out some of their disagreements successfully and to listen to each other more effectively to help their groups function.
