Week 1
Team name: Hesket’s Happy Stars
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We had our first ice cream Fridays event and sold lots. We made £100 profit. In English, we made persuasive adverts and put them all around the school to persuade people to come. We had to get all of the ice creams ready and set up our sales table with a whiteboard menu.
What did you learn this week?
We learned about money, giving change and selling ice cream. We learned to use snappy titles, pictures, slogans and rhetorical questions in our posters.
What did you find difficult this week?
It was hard to know which jobs everyone was doing when we were selling the ice creams. Counting the money was tricky because it was so busy! It was hard to work out how much change people needed.

One of our persuasive adverts we made and displayed around the school.

We worked in pairs to count the money we made and swapped to check each other's totals.

Working hard to count the correct change!
Week 2
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We evaluated our event from last week and talked about what we need to change to make it better. We split into two teams and worked together to decide what jobs everyone needs to do. We practised giving out change.
What did you learn this week?
How to work in a team and be fair to everyone. We also improved our money skills.
What did you find difficult this week?
Making sure everyone was happy with their job and sharing out what we had to do.
Week 3
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We had to get ready to start our new idea - selling High Hesket hats. We wrote a letter as a class and sent this out to all the grown-ups in the school. We sold ice cream again on our Ice Cream Fridays event and we got new flavours! We added toffee popcorn, sour rocket lollies and wild berry soleros. We changed which jobs we were all doing and worked in our teams.
What did you learn this week?
We kept practising our money skills. We learned how to do different jobs in our teams and which jobs suit our skills best!
What did you find difficult this week?
Our Ice Cream Fridays event was very busy and we found it a little chaotic at times. It was hard to find all of the information we needed to give people about our High Hesket hats.

Drafting our class letter about our next project - High Hesket hats!

Of course we have to support our own business!

Our ice cream cleaners worked hard to keep the cool box organised.
Week 4
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We started to get ready for our big finale event (a movie night at school!) and counted the profit we made at our last Ice Cream Fridays event.
What did you learn this week?
We had to check the right change and keep practising our public speaking skills. We had to help people choose which ice creams they would like to order from our menu. When counting the money, we had to count in our different times tables, even our 20s!
What did you find difficult this week?
It was hard to decide what movies we would like to show. At Ice Cream Fridays, it was tricky to keep the box organised when there were so many boxes!
Week 5
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We collected all of the letters of people who wanted to order a High Hesket hat. We had to count up all of the orders and used a tally chart to know the amount of each colour to order. We also kept planning our movie night and, as a class, we voted on which movies we would like to show. We tried to pick movies that fit the timings of the event and something that everyone would enjoy from Year 1 to Year 6. We also had another Ice Cream Fridays event, even though this one wasn't as sunny!
What did you learn this week?
We have learned which movies we are allowed to watch in school, as well as which ones are appropriate and what everyone would enjoy watching. We practised using tally charts when looking at our hat orders.
What did you find difficult this week?
We found out some new information from our hat supplier which meant we had to do some reordering and recounting. It was hard to choose movies which would appeal to everyone.

Trying to read parents' handwriting!

Selling ice creams, rain or shine!
Week 6 - half term
Week 7
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We created tickets for our Movie Night Finale event next week. We each did three designs and tried to make them about the movies we are showing on the night. We also did another Ice Cream Fridays event at the same time as our PTA did a Fun Run for the school. We stayed open even later to serve everybody.
What did you learn this week?
We had to think about our designs and what they would be like on our tickets.
What did you find difficult this week?
It was hard to choose just three designs to do and to get them finished in time to photocopy them for everyone!

Week 8
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We made tickets for our movie night and planned what we still needed to get ready. Our High Hesket hats finally arrived so we gave those out to everyone who ordered one. On Thursday, it was our movie night so we got the hall ready by putting out all the gymnastics mats and collecting cushions and blankets from around the school. We made paper cones as popcorn holders and got glasses of juice ready. After school, we hosted our movie night. We gave out the tickets, popcorn and juice we got ready and had two movies on for people to go and see. We also had another ice cream Fridays event!
What did you learn this week?
We learned how to make popcorn cones out of paper. We had to be very careful when filling them up so popcorn didn't go everywhere! We had to be good at counting to make sure we had enough popcorn and juice for 76 children!
What did you find difficult this week?
It was hard not to spill the juice everywhere! We found it tricky to fill up the popcorn cones equally because they were different sizes. We had to remember who ordered which colour hat too!
Week 9
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We had our last Ice Cream Friday and we almost sold out of everything! We had some rocket lollies left over so we saved them and gave them out to people after our school Sports Day. We worked as a team to make a video about our Bright Stars experience. We split into groups to film different parts, some of us even dressed up and used puppets! Our business mentor, Emmy from LMBA, helped us film it.
What did you learn this week?
We learned how hectic it is to film a video! We learned how important it is to give people the correct order of ice creams so they might come back again in the future. We realised how happy our Ice Cream Fridays events were making people and are sad to not be doing anymore!
What did you find difficult this week?
It was hard to work with puppets and props and remember everything we wanted to say. We were very sad in our last Ice Cream Friday and found it difficult to stop selling them.
For pupils to answer:
In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?
It means teamwork, just having fun and getting families together. We have learned about business and loved making people happy. Bright Stars has meant everything to us!
For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?
My class have adored being part of Bright Stars this year. We have worked so hard to think of creative ideas and make them a reality, no matter what obstacles got in our way! The whole school has rallied behind our efforts and I am so grateful to all the families who have supported our ideas. It has been lovely to see families come together and the happiness all our ideas have brought. My class have become more confident in how they speak to people and their maths skills have improved with counting money and giving change. The teamwork and collaboration they have shown is excellent and they have supported each other each step of the way. I am very proud of them all and I think Bright Stars has brought out the best in them!
