Week 1
Team name: We are still deciding
Tell us what you have been doing this week
This week we met with Allan from the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce. He shared what his role is and what the Chamber of Commerce is. We then completed a task to see what we already know about businesses. We listened carefully and shared our ideas. Allan then addressed some of those ideas and gave us some more detail into how a business runs and what they can do. The pupils were very enthusiastic to ask questions and find out more information.
What did you learn this week?
We learned a lot of new information about businesses including:
- Some of the different roles in a business
- How important team work is
- Businesses can provide a service or sell a product
- The importance of making a profit
- Who is going to be interested in a business
What did you find difficult this week?
We found it difficult thinking of a particular direction we wanted to go in for our business.

The pupils were working hard to think of any more information about businesses.

All of our ideas.

Our ideas of what we would like to sell
Week 2
Tell us what you have been doing this week
This week we have been brainstorming some ideas for our business. We had a lot of discussions about what direction we would like to go in. After a long talk we decided that we are very creative and enjoy making things. So all of our ideas were based around things we could get everyone in year 1 to help us make. We were thinking about the skills we have learned and what we have made throughout the year in Art and DT.
What did you learn this week?
We learned a lot about our team of bright stars, including what we all like to do at home in our spare time with our families. This helped us to decide on items we could make and who could be an expert to share their knowledge. We focused on sharing our ideas and listening to each other.
What did you find difficult this week?
We found it difficult to decide on just one idea because we had so many good ones!
So we need some more time to think and decide by creating a mock design at home and voting next week.
Week 3
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We voted on our chosen business idea of making bookmarks. We agreed on this idea because it links in with our school reading initiative we are running at the moment. We are hoping by selling bookmarks it will encourage more people to read. During our vote we were thinking about promoting reading and we thought about the use of "Reading Buddies" for people to read with. We use teddy bears in our school so we thought about what we could make instead. Therefore, we decided to create hand puppet reading buddies which uses our DT skills from last year. We're going to make them nice and colourful!!
What did you learn this week?
How to vote and to make sure it is done fairly so everyone's voice and opinions are heard.
That our product needs to be for a target audience and we need to make it appealing to make people want to buy it.
We were learning about how to promote a product and what we need to do for this.
What did you find difficult this week?
Designing our bookmarks, everyone had so many ideas it was hard to choose. We decided to do a bronze, silver and gold option to include as many of the designs we possibly could.

We sat together and decided to search the internet for some ideas.

After all our research these are the ideas we all liked the most. Our plan is starting to come together.

Everyone was very excited to see a £50!!
Week 4
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We got to see a £50 note!!! This was very exciting as not all of us had seen one before. We had to think carefully about what we were going to use our money for.
We started to think about what materials we would need to make everything we wanted to. School have a lot of art resources so we took a trip to our big art cupboard to find out if we could use any materials we already had. We found so many nice piece of card and stickers that we could use. So we decided to invest our money into the resources for our reading buddies.
What did you learn this week?
How to use our £50 effectively. That we could use resources that have been donated and things we already have around school to make our products, this was to save us some money that we needed to use elsewhere for other products.
What did you find difficult this week?
Deciding what to spend our money on because we have so much we thought we could buy lots of things, but when we realised how expensive things are we had to change our strategy.
Week 5
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We have been looking in more detail at all of the job roles that are within a company. We each got fill out a special Inglewood bright stars job application form. Which made us think about why we wanted that role and why we would be good at it. This was a fun task because we were able to talk about each others strengths and why we think they would be well suited for a job. We worked really well as a team to do this!
What did you learn this week?
We learned from Miss Dobie about what each role does and how each one is important for a business to run smoothly.
What some of the questions on a job application might look like and how to answer them successfully.
How to identify our own and others strengths.
What did you find difficult this week?
Choosing which jobs we wanted to apply for, we liked the sound of all of them!! But we realised one person can not do everything and we need others to help us.

Some examples of our Job application forms.

Week 6 - half term
Week 7
Tell us what you have been doing this week
This was the first time I visited the school , after Allan Davies left the chamber , and then confirmed due to ill health he was unable to continue with the project, he had started.
I visited the school on the 4 June @13.30 - 15.00, I met miss Gemma and was told very quickly it was miss Dobie, I think it may of been a future CEO ! that made it clear !
Obviously I didn't know what had been done to date, and found out that Allan had only met Miss Dobie and the children once and it was brief.
What did you learn this week?
I learnt Allan hadn't done anything really.
We named our company ISB Inglewood school bookmarks. Our Mission is 'We make bookmarks because every book matters'. We decided what we would make and the children are cracking on with that, the company has a structure and all appointments have been made.
What did you find difficult this week?
The children in class will make an organisational flow chart and design a logo.
I am visiting again on the 11 June @ 9am
nothing was hard and it was a pleasure to meet miss Dobie and the children

Following Kevin's visit we made our organisational flow chart of everyone's roles within our company

These are all of the children's logo ideas. We got the year 2 pupils involved in our logo designing.

This is the chosen logo. Everyone voted and this one was the favourite because it is bright, colourful and provides all of the information about our company.
These are all of our finished products ready to sell.
Week 8
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We have been making and adding the last finishing touches to our products to make sure they are perfect. Then we have been finalising our plans to sell our products at our weekly reading morning. This is where our grown ups come into school to read with us and they get a cup of coffee and a biscuit too! We plan to showcase our Reading Buddies and Bookmarks to them and hope that they would like to buy them (fingers crossed).
We met with Kevin and we all voted for our favourite logo to represent our company, it was tough to choose just one! Kevin has helped print some posters with our logo on.
What did you learn this week?
How well we work together as a team to complete tasks. We were there to support each other and give ideas when making our products. Some of the sewing was a bit tricky but we all helped each other finish.
That not everyone's logos could be chosen and that we had to go with the majority vote.
What did you find difficult this week?
Choosing just one logo for our company because there were so many amazing ones!!
Ensuring all of our products were ready and tested before being sold next week.
Week 9
Tell us what you have been doing this week
We have been very busy selling our products! We hosted our reading morning where we provided the parents with coffee and biscuits and the opportunity to read with us and view our bookmarks and reading buddies. This was very successful and we made a profit. We still had some products left so we decided to set up a stall in our school playground so the grown ups that could not come in the morning would have the opportunity to see and purchase our bookmarks and reading buddies. The grown ups loved this and our stall was very busy.
What did you learn this week?
How to get people to buy our products How to keep track of our money To count our stock throughout selling That everyone's role was very important when we were selling our products and communication was key To be professional
What did you find difficult this week?
Nothing we have really enjoyed this week and getting to show everyone what we have made. We felt very proud that people wanted to buy what we had made. We think they were very impressed!!
For pupils to answer:
In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?
We have been happy and excited to work as a team and to work together to help people read more. We have learned new things about businesses and the jobs that people in different companies do.
For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?
The programme has had a positive impact on our school and on the children participating. They have learned a lot about how a business works and they really realised the importance of their role and took it very seriously. It was nice to see the children's confidence grow and communicate with their peers to share their thoughts. I have enjoyed participating in this project and allowing the children to take control in which direction they wanted to take the company and to see their creativity shine.
