Week 1

Team name: Nurture Nature Squad

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we decided that we will develop our school gardens. We want to create a garden that will be provide fruit and vegetables in the future and be a community hub where everyone can go to feel good and part of something. We have come up with ideas for things we can sell that link with healthy diet and fruit and veg too. We have been planting seeds in compost. We have also been designing logos and names for our company. We voted for our name (above!). For logos we put them all on a wall on the back of the class and three have come out on top so we need to combine ideas!

What did you learn this week?

We learned that in a productive team we all need to do different jobs! Some of us enjoyed designing logos more than planting, others loved getting messy in the soil and planting seeds while others watered and nurtured them, some worked in a ‘human resources’ role sorting through job applications!

What did you find difficult this week?

It was tricky to choose a logo because there were so many good ones!
It was also challenging because, with it being the first week, we all wanted to take part in everything that was going on!

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we worked on planting seeds in different ways, thinking about planting seeds for the future! We decided this might link with our 'tagline' for our business too! We took seeds from strawberries and planted them in our own pots. We have watered and nurtured all our plants. We weeded our beds and put our scarecrows into them to protect them. We also started to draft our fruit and veg alphabet books, which we are going to continue with next week!

What did you learn this week?

We learned that when we muck in we (quite literally!) we are an excellent team! We have learned that we need to take advantage of everyone's skills and talents to make a business work.

What did you find difficult this week?

It was difficult to make progress in such a short period of time with our books, so we know we need to work on these throughout the week. We have learned that we need to commit more of our time.

Week 3

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We split into our chosen groups this week. The financial team have been looking at the different flavours and colours for popsicles to think of some prices for them and what the customers might want. They also made notes of what questions to ask people who might be interested. The design team are going through the A-Z of fruit and vegtable and doing illusatrations of them and researching some facts about them too. The planting and communicating teams went outside. The planting team planted in rows. The communication team thought of how to make people interested in the product.

What did you learn this week?

About the different types of fruit and veg:
UGLI fruit
How to plant fruit in rows
How to draw different fruit
How to write a questionnaire

What did you find difficult this week?

We asked the groups and they said:
Design- Drawing the different fruit and veg.
Finance- Thinking of the questions
Planting- How to plant in lines

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week, the team finished off planting the remaining seeds in the beds outsite. The surveys/questionnaire's which had been prepared in the previous week were handed out around the school to gather information about popsicle preferences. Collectively, the group also looked at ways in which they could turn any spare fruit into popsicles which could then be sold amongst fellow pupils, teachers and parents!

What did you learn this week?

The group learned about why it is important to hear everyone's opinion when making a decision. They also developed their decision making skills when deciding which fruit would be best to use for the popsicles from both a business (financial) and environmental (waste/sustainability) perspective.

What did you find difficult this week?

Having to gather questionnaire results from a wide range of people and deciding which fruit would be most beneficial ona profit and sustainability basis.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we were on our school residential, so we enlisted some 'employees' in the children staying at school who went round and delivered our questionnaires. They discovered that berry flavours were very popular with children on the whole.

What did you learn this week?

We learned that our business can keep going even when we are not there, and potentially beyond the Bright Stars window.

What did you find difficult this week?

It was difficult to manage our 'employees' remotely, but we managed it!

some

This is the questionnaire we designed and our 'employees' used to do customer research!

Week 6 - half term

Week 7

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We created a banner for selling our tomato plants that we have nurtured and also created posters for selling tomatoes to put around school. We used bright inks to make our posters eye catching.

What did you learn this week?

We learned that when we all work more quietly we actually get more done. We took advice from our business mentor about how we sometimes need to work more quietly in our jobs in order to get things done, especially if we are on a short time frame.

What did you find difficult this week?

It was difficult not to chatter as we enjoy Bright Stars, but we did understand that we need to focus on finishing work off.

some

We worked hard on our banner, enlisting the help of some Reception children too!

some

Our tomato selling team encouraging customers.

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We sold the final remaining fruit ice pops and continued to plant and sell the tomato plants that we've been growing throughout the programme.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt about the importance of supply and demand, as the fruit ice pops were in high demand, even in the cold weather!

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it difficult to manage the supply of tomato plants that we had. As we've managed to keep the plants healthy, it was hard to plant them all in the timeframe in preparation for selling them.

Week 9

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we split up into three groups (Finance, Drawing/Art and Planting). The Finance Team were responsible for counting up all of the coins that have been collected after selling the products. They then subtracted the overall amount from the original budget to work out the profit. The Drawing/Art team finished off their sketches and colouring of the different fruit and veg in the A-Z of fruit/veg. The Planting team finished planting the remaining tomato plants that were left, to try and sell them in the final week of trading.

What did you learn this week?

Addition and subtraction using currency, profits, how to draw and shade in different types of fruit and vegetable, how to plant tomato plants properly to help them to grow.

What did you find difficult this week?

Counting up using the different types of coins, planting the tomato plants without getting soil on the carpet!
