Week 1

Team name:

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we created mind maps to think of ideas for our business. We also applied for job roles in our class team and filled in application forms to say why we would be good at that job.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt what a social enterprise is and the different types of jobs that people have in a company.

What did you find difficult this week?

Explaining why we would be good at the job we wanted to apply for.

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

The business plan team, directors and head of production worked with Debbie from Workington Town to write up our business plan.
The marketing team started decorating buntin to advertise and hang up at our school fayre event.
The finance team started pricing up plant pots and seeds, working out how much it would cost to make one and decided on a price to sell at. They then had to work out how much profit we would make.
The customer service team started making a survey to find out people's favourite cakes.
The design team created some designs for our plant pots.

What did you learn this week?

The finance team learnt that we can't just come up with a price to sell something at, we need to think about how much it costs us and how much profit we want to make.

What did you find difficult this week?

The customer service team found creating a survey a bit tricky. We found it hard to write questions that were specific enough and that were going to give us the answers we needed.

Week 3

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we decorated our plant pots using special paint so it won't wash off and planted our strawberry plants and sunflower seeds.

What did you learn this week?

That sometimes it is better to keep a design simple rather than overcomplicating. It was quite tricky to keep our painting neat so the simpler designs worked and looked better as they weren't dripping or splodging everywhere.

What did you find difficult this week?

Keeping the paint from dripping and splodging into each other when painting onto the plant pots.

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week the marketing team helped to create a digital poster and social media post, and they delivered flyers through doors in the village.

What did you learn this week?

That an information poster needs to be bright, colourful and eye-catching to get people's attention but it also needs to have the correct information on that people need to know.

What did you find difficult this week?

Getting all the information onto the poster in a neat, simple way that didn't mean lots of writing for people to have to stand and read.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been creating bracelets and necklaces to sell at our summer fayre.

What did you learn this week?

We have learned to work well as a team and to share out jobs so 1 person isn't left with the biggest workload.

What did you find difficult this week?

Trying to be patient and to keep going when the first bracelets weren't quite working or the braiding went a bit wrong.

Week 7

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we had to bake all the cakes for our summer fayre, create signs and posters to put on our stalls and we held the summer fayre for the community. We sold the products on the stalls with help from our partners at Workington Town Community Trust. Lots of parents and family members came - there were about 200 people there!

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to give customers a good service when serving them, how to give the correct change to people when paying and how to talk about our products positively to sell them and to get people to buy them.

What did you find difficult this week?

Managing the crowds at the stalls and trying to hear what people are saying when it was really busy. It was tricky making sure we gave people the correct change when they bought something.

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we completed our expenses sheet and worked out the profit we have made. We decided that we wanted to use the profit to support our 'Play, Lead, Thrive' playtime project by purchasing some more resources such as a giant connect 4, some more chalk for our new outdoor chalkboard and to put towards creating a 'mud area'.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to complete an expenses sheet and work out the profit.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it hard to all agree as a class on what to use our profit for.

Week 9

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We enjoyed a treat with our business mentor - a trip to the park!

What did you find difficult this week?

For pupils to answer:

In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?

For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?

My class have learnt all about running a business, the importance of maths when running a business, how important it is to listen to your customers and developed their team work skills. Lots of children who never would have volunteered to sell and speak to the public before this project had a great time selling on stalls, speaking to customers and using their maths skills to give correct change.

Please provide your business plan.

Charity name/money donated to.

We are supporting a charity - Hospice at Home West Cumbria Registered Charity No. 1086837

Final profit (minus the £50 seed funding).

£442.21

Prize categories and reasons

Most profitable social enterprise

We made a profit of £442.21 which will go a long way in supporting our chosen charity and towards getting new loose play parts for our playground. The children worked hard to get donation of lots of items which helped us make an even bigger profit.

Best community engagement

Our project brought together our whole community for a special celebration of 150 years of our school; we secured funding from The Big Lunch to provide a healthy picnic, we got the choir to sing and there were over 200 people at our summer fayre.
