Supporting Parental Engagement in Careers Education: Insights from Young People

During the annual Dream Placement selection event in December 2024, The Centre for Leadership Performance (CforLP) engaged 16-18-year-olds in discussing key business challenges.

One pivotal question explored the role parents should play in career education. Their responses offered valuable insights and practical suggestions for businesses.

Placements for Parents and Students: Businesses can offer placements not only to students but also to their parents, building a direct connection with careers

Career Fairs and Workshops: Businesses can host career fairs, possibly at business sites, and involve parents in their children’s career exploration process. The engagement can be case-by-case but should encourage active involvement

CV Support: Students often need guidance on CVs and career pathways, and parents may not always be equipped to provide this support, so businesses should step in with help

Changing the Approach to Career Fairs: Career fairs need to be more engaging, involving businesses that can provide more practical advice beyond just CV checks

The Dream Placement Programme

Dream Placement is a six month leadership development programme for all 16-18 year olds across Cumbria, which for some young people will result in a week’s Dream Placement.

Dream Placement is more than just a week’s work experience; The programme offers a number of leadership development opportunities for young people even if they do not secure a placement, from development workshops to interview advice and experience.

It’s a platform for showcasing leadership in action. Connecting young people with businesses to help them make informed choices about their future while enabling organisations to engage with the next generation of leaders. It’s a win-win collaboration that benefits everyone involved.

What is The Centre for Leadership Performance

The Centre for Leadership Performance is a not-for-profit organisation. Their mission is to: ‘Develop Cumbria’s Leaders for Today and Tomorrow‘. They collaborate with educators, businesses and young people to co-create, develop and deliver programmes (like Dream Placement) that nurture aspirations, ignite ambitions and enhance leadership capability from Primary School to Retirement, building an inclusive lifelong leadership journey.
