Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we had a visit from Franks and Portlock and Kaefer companies. They told us lots of things about business including the different opportunites that having careers in business can offer such as travel. They talked to us about different aspects of business and what makes a business successful. They showed us their company logos and the meaning behind them.
We have discussed lots of different ideas for our bright stars initiative and narrowed them down to a few that we have all agreed on following a democratic vote.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt about business opportunites, how a business woks, what is needed to make a business successful, why a business has a logo and many this that need to be taken into consideration when setting up a business such as needs and costs.

What did you find difficult this week?

Deciding on our final ideas for Bright Stars because we had soo many great ideas it was hard to whittle them down, but using our past experiences and knowing what we will be able to make a profit from

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been discussing the different areas of business and deciding what we would each like to do. For example who would like to be an accountant and be responsible for costs and who would like to work in the marketing department. We have been learning how to make macrame with Mrs Liddle and practising the different knots. we have realised that it may take a while and that we need to start making the macrame as soon as we have the resources that we need for our craft sale.

What did you learn this week?

We've been learning a new craft - how to make macrame. we've also been learning about the different areas of business and what it means such as marketing.

What did you find difficult this week?

Learning macrame

Week 3

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been discussing the 5 P's of business. We have been thinking about what we need for our projects, who will want what we offer, how will we promote it - we have had lots of ideas such as making posters and leaflets and what difference our products will make. As well as this we have been putting the final touches to our logos.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt about the 5 P's of business. we realised we need to think about where we will get the materials and ingredients from that we need and how much it will cost. We are donating the bird boxes we make to residential homes, so we have decided to write letters to different companies.

What did you find difficult this week?

Finding the time to work on our Bright stars project. Thinking about details of how we will make money from our products.

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have been writing letters to different companies in the local area to try and get them to make donations of things that we need for our project. we have written to a local timber company, craft shops, Tesco's and Morrisons. We had to think about how we could persuade them to donate because of the great difference we will make with our project. We will then email and post our letters.
We have also been thinking about how we will make our pebble art pictures, looking at examples and sketching our own ideas.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt how to write formal letters. we are learning to use persuasion in our writing. We are writing the letters in small groups and we are all helping each other using our different skills. We have been sharing our ideas, then some people write, other people edit, some people proof read.

What did you find difficult this week?

We have had to manage our time carefully this week as we have had our SATS this week so we have created a timeline of when things need to be completed by.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we went to Bootle beach to do collect pebbles for our crafts that we are going to sell at a coffee and tea afternoon. We will also sell some of our pebble art at Tarn Bay Treats beach shop. First we collected the pebbles that we needed, we had to look carefully for small flat stones. Then we collected the litter using litter pickers. We filled four bin bags. Sandra and Anita from Franks and Portlock our partnership companies came to the beach and helped us with this.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt that it was important to work together as a team to get the job done! We've had some hiccups with our bird boxes. we wrote to a local timber firm to ask if they would donate the wood we needed to build the bird boxes. They donated the wood which was great but it wasn't quite the right size

What did you find difficult this week?

Because the wood wasn't quite right we will be unable to make the bird boxes ourselves but we had a community member volunteer to make some for us to donate to local hospitals and residential homes.

Week 6

Tell us what you have been doing this week

We have been making posters for our afternoon tea and fliers. We delivered the fliers that we made around the local village. we have also advertised on facebook, class dojo and there is a poster in the local shop window. We have been researching what cakes we will make for our afternoon tea and writing a list of ingredients. we were really pleased to have a reply from Tesco who have said they will contribute to the things we need for this.

What did you learn this week?

We learnt that we need to think carefully about costs to stay within our £50 budget when making cakes and that we couldn't necessarily make everything we wanted because of the costs. We had to change some of ideas to stay within budget.

What did you find difficult this week?

We found it tricky working out how much money we had to spend on ingredients and what we could buy with this,

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

On Thursday afternoon we held our afternoon tea. We baked lots of cakes and biscuits. We were really pleased to have a £10 Tesco voucher, after writing to them about our project and Anita from Franks and Portlock donated ingredients to us. We have been busy baking and putting the final touches to our crafts that we are selling. We had to think about pricing and displaying our items for sale so that we were prepared for our big event. We sold everything! Pebble pictures were really popular, our bird boxes sold straight away, we sold lots of cakes, teas and coffee for our community event.

What did you learn this week?

We have been very busy but we all helped each other. We learnt that to make a profit it was important to think carefully about pricing so that people would buy our items. We learnt about checking we were giving the correct change, how to display our items and reducing prices at the end of the sale.

What did you find difficult this week?

Using our time to have everything organised and ready was important, because we were so busy. We had to follow recipes carefully to make our cakes and remember to follow the steps in order.

For pupils to answer:
In one sentence please tell us what bright stars has meant to you?

Fun, cakes, community and working together as a team.

For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?

This programme has helped Year 5 and 6 gain insights into business and future careers. There were many aspects of business that the children have developed a much better understanding of through Bright Stars, such as finance and marketing, thanks to our business mentors and the Bright Stars project. It has helped the children to recognise that they can use their different strengths it different ways, now and in the future as well as understand that it is okay to be good at different things and not necessarily at everything - you can still succeed. The children have developed an understanding of how they can use resources around them to be creative and whilst thinking about sustainability. It has been fantastic to see the community come together for this event and the school has also developed many new connections through this enterprise scheme. Thank you Bright Stars.
