We have decided our social enterprise will involve working on the School's Garden round the side to transform it into a Science Garden for school!
Week 1
Team name:
Tell us what you have been doing this week
The class discussed what a business was, including the 5 Ps. They then split into groups to complete the mind-diagram and ideas for their business and the 5 Ps associated with their ideas.
We discussed what a social enterprise was.
Introduced the skills builder framework and at the end of the lesson, agreed on which skills they used.

What did you find difficult this week?

One of our groups talking and responding very well to one another. Discussing ideas for the 5 Ps.

The group I was having a discussion with which involved many ideas of raising money.

One of our pupils was very proud of the logo design she made. It take inspiration of the creativity and messy side of a business.

The children love being creative and drawing and were completely in their element when designing the logos.
Week 2
Tell us what you have been doing this week
At the start we reviewed what a business was and they all remembered the 5 Ps of business! We completed our agreed business plan and the students had a go at designing a logo for Business 34! Our project will be a science garden in the grounds of the school.
We also looked at what kind of different roles there was in a business and the students all got an application to fill in for the team they wanted to be part of, how their skills would help and what their two best skills from the skill builder framework were. At the end, we reviewed what skills we used and recorded them.
What did you learn this week?
The children learned that many of the roles in a company are very important and often communicate with one another.

Week 4
Tell us what you have been doing this week
This week we started by reminding ourselves of our project. We then went outside to do out site visit of where our garden will be, what work needs done and to generate ideas to make it better. We got very excited as we spotted two frogs in the garden!
When we got back outside, students found out what teams they would be in and they all got given different tasks to do. Our project managers helped people who were struggling and get me up to date with how teams were getting on, designers and production team planned the garden and built a prototype finance and marketing looked at items we needed.

Week 5
Tell us what you have been doing this week
This week, we have been deep diving into research and understanding cost effectiveness of resources we have been researching. The teams worked together to finalise lists and organise on our map where certain things would be placed on our Science Garden.
What did you learn this week?
Products that offer lots for a smaller price are more cost effective. Some items are more expensive than others. Some websites offer the same products for a cheaper price. Very quickly we would spend the full £50 if we bought the paving that we liked the look of!
What did you find difficult this week?
We struggled on finding common ground on how the paving would be used in the garden and decided that only a few paving stones would be used as a path from one side to the other,

Here we are discussing and talking about what finance is.

Week 10
Tell us what you have been doing this week
This week we finalised our plans for purchasing items for our Science Garden and finalised a layout ready for January. We are keen to make a start once our local leveller makes the ground flat. We have thought about weed removal and preparation of our resources for use in the New Year. We have discussed and understood that this project will continue into the new year until it is complete and organised.
What did you learn this week?
We have learnt that we need to plan and prep in advance to bigger projects as sometimes we have to wait for others to complete their work before advancing forwards.
What did you find difficult this week?
For pupils to answer:
In one sentence please tell us what Bright Stars has meant to you?
We have been able to be creative about making something for our school and we feel involved when being a business.
For teachers to answer:
Can you tell us the impact this programme has had on your school?
The children have really enjoyed Nicola coming in and learning about different aspects of finance and social enterprises. They have enjoyed working together on different parts of the project and look forward to making a difference for our school. I know the school will enjoy using the science garden as part of future curriculum experiments and learning, as well as used as sensory opportunities that the whole school will have access to.
