Bright Stars - School Update

South Walney Junior School

Supported by

Social Enterprise Summary

After our initial discussions with the school, the children came up with their charity which is going to be CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) which the school have links to.
The enterprise is going to be an arts and crafts event for the whole school to take part in, the funds from Brightstars are going to pay for the materials. The concept is each child will donate an amount to be given a bag on entry, they then can choose to make a wooden heart, bookmark, decorate cookies and there will also be a raffle. All will be in the theme of a red heart, in keeping with the charity being about our hearts and how to keep healthy and most importantly to raise funds for children to get early testing.

Week 1

Team name: Happy Hearts

Tell us what you have been doing this week

Our first week was around Myself and Millie going in and doing a powerpoint on BAE and the part we play in Brightstars. We then had a brainstorming session on the charity with a short video being played to the children from the charity CRY. Lot's of great ideas coming out for logos and what we will be offering at the arts and crafts event. Also how we can gain donations from the local community to enable us to maximise our earning potential.

Week 2

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we have worked on logos and letters, the children went into groups some were thinking of the logo that they are developing to use and others started writing letters for the local stores to ask for contributions. We are looking t biscuits, icing sugar and any decorations. Some children worked on their ipads pulling together a great image of a heart running and smiling - keeping fit! The letters were penned and just needed checking before the children delivered them to the local shops.

Week 4

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week we went back over what we had done previous to half term, we then actually put the letters onto the schools headed paper with the logo. Some of the children in their groups had been working on the marketing side of the project, they designed posters put the date of the event, the timings that each year group would be coming into the library and the charity that the event is working towards. The posters were printed off. laminated and advertised around the school so that parents are aware of what the event is for and why they are being asked to donate. Another group made a video.

Week 5

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week has been very much a week of doing, the children have been busy creating bookmarks, wooden hearts and friendship beads all using the theme of our charity - a heart. A prototype was created, the children watched how all of the items were to be constructed. Then the children came and picked up what materials were required for them to start building and creating. In the group that were completing the beads the same process was used with them all helping each other to achieve some great products. The letters from the previous week were handed in to the local shops and donations given.

What did you learn this week?

The children learnt to follow a plan and how to ensure they had the right materials to complete the task in hand. Also taking time to create the letters to the local shops, speaking to the Manager in a respectful way and explaining the project.

What did you find difficult this week?

The challenge this week was pulling all the different parts together, the posters got put up around school, the assembly video was completed, the products have been started and we received donations.

Week 8

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This week was used to make all the paper bags for the rest of the school, with the theme of the red heart to signify the CRY logo. Once these were completed we then concentrated on making more bookmarks, wooden hearts, beads and felt hearts. All keeping with the theme of the charity, which is the red hearts. The children worked really hard keeping an on-going tally on the white board so we could see how many were being made.

Small teams to look after the various activities, then moving around so everyone got a go at making everything on offer.

What did you learn this week?

The children learned how to work collaboratively, all having a different role to play - some were producing, some keeping a tally and some preparing the materials that would be used.

The children learned how to be tolerant with each other, as everyone works differently.

What did you find difficult this week?

Trying to make enough of everything to enable us to give each child something in their bags.

Week 9

Tell us what you have been doing this week

This was our last week, the children pulled everything together. We had one classroom which had all the tables set up with biscuits, icing and cake decorations. The other room was transformed into small stalls which had all the arts and crafts that the children had been busy making over the course of the project. We had bookmarks, wooden Christmas Hearts, bracelet's, felt hearts along with a paper bag all decorated with the theme of hearts to go alongside our charity CRY.

We invited a lady called Lesley to the event who's son sadly passed away, the charity is one that she gets involved with.

What did you learn this week?

The children learned this week how to set up, organise the whole school to come and take their turn in going around the various stalls. They gave change to the children and worked out all the finances, they also were very respectful to our visitor. They saw how pulling together was positive.

What did you find difficult this week?

The children enjoyed this week greatly, they did however realise how much time and effort goes into events and how you have to be super organised.

Week 10

Tell us what you have been doing this week

In our final week we worked together ensuring that we had enough hearts, biscuits, decorations, beaded bangles - basically everything we needed when the whole school came into the classroom. The children all brought a donation in and were provided with a hand decorated brown paper bag, then then were able to take a seat and decorate the biscuits that had been donated to the school from parents and local shops. Once this was completed and safely put in their bag they moved on the the stalls that had been set up with the various products on.

What did you learn this week?

The children in year 6 learned how to work as a team under a busy situation, they had to guide the younger children in to the classroom get them seated and make sure that they all had their bags and plenty of biscuits to decorate to take home with them - if they got home to be honest!

What did you find difficult this week?

Making sure each child in the school received something, organising each year group to come in. All the children worked together brilliantly and were so well behaved.
